College football: Mike Munchak won?t coach at Penn St.

College football ? Mike Munchak says he is not heading to Penn State as coach.

The Tennessee Titans coach said Wednesday he?s flattered to be mentioned for his alma mater, but insists he loves what he?s doing in Tennessee.

?You all know Penn State means a lot to me. I obviously went to school there and I?m real concerned for what they?ve gone through the last couple of months. I?m flattered that people think I?d be a great fit for the coach there,? Munchak said Wednesday after practice.

?They have not contacted me in any way or talked to me about the possibility of working there. I have not reached out to them. I have a job that I enjoy quite a bit.?

This is the third time since longtime coach Joe Paterno was fired that Munchak has denied interest in the job. He denied it the day after Paterno was fired and again Dec. 2 when his name came up in connection with the opening. He was linked again Wednesday to the job and did his best to squash the idea he might leave the NFL franchise he has worked for as either a player or coach since 1982.

SEC unveils schedule with A&M, Mizzou

College football ? Missouri and Texas A&M will play their first Southeastern Conference games at home on Sept. 8, and Alabama will visit LSU in a rematch of the Bowl Championship Series national championship on Nov. 3.

The SEC released its first 14-team schedule on Wednesday with new members Missouri and Texas A&M as part of the conference.

Missouri will play the 2012 season in the SEC East and hosts Georgia on Sept. 8. Texas A&M will be in the West and hosts Florida. The first conference game will be Aug. 30 when South Carolina visits Vanderbilt.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles face crunch time

a man plays with Nintendo Wii U controller

The rumours are everywhere and, despite silence from Sony and Microsoft, they are gaining traction.

With the Xbox 360 now a stately seven years old and PlayStation 3 pushing six, it seems a new console generation is on the horizon. An announcement from one of the two manufacturers is expected at the gigantic E3 exhibition in Los Angeles in June.

But 2012 is already looking as if it will be an extraordinarily busy year for games. Sony will launch its Vita handheld console in the UK in February. The sleek high-end device features a 127mm (5in) OLED display, innovative rear-mounted touch panel, twin analogue controls and Wi-Fi internet access.

Titles such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, Escape Plan and Little Deviants suggest an interesting gaming experience, but the question is whether consumers will buy a new dedicated gaming machine with smartphones eating into the market.

Nintendo is also lining up its Wii U console for release later in the year. Featuring a tablet-style controller with its own screen, the machine promises some intriguing new gameplay concepts, but it is still underpowered compared with the PS3 and Xbox 360. The announced games ? including new versions of puzzler Pikmin and fighting game Super Smash Brothers ? have hardly set the universe alight.

Elsewhere, it looks like industry upstart Rockstar could be dominating the charts this year. March sees the launch of its gritty shooter Max Payne 3, sporting ludicrously balletic shootouts and sophisticated character animation. But the big news is the return of Grand Theft Auto. Set in a Hollywood-style city of fame-hungry wannabes and retired criminals, GTA V looks like another huge sleazy thrill ride. An autumn release is possible, but it would be wrong to assume anything with this company.

Sequels will do huge business as usual ? and it is very much a year of threes. Sci-fi adventure Mass Effect 3, sword-and-sorcery romp Diablo III and jungle shooter Far Cry 3 should all do good business.

Publishers are also keen to bring back franchises that have enjoyed long breaks. Square Enix has its promising reboot of Tomb Raider arriving in the autumn, featuring a teenage Lara Croft fighting for her life on a deadly island.

The same publisher is also exhuming its bald contract killer, Agent 47, for new stealth game Hitman: Absolution.

It could be that the most creative, thought-provoking comeback will be Bioshock: Infinite, a steam-punk historical fantasy set upon a floating city.

Luckily, a few original titles are expected in the coming months. The downloadable PS3 title Journey promises an adventure set in a mysterious desert where gamers must form co-operative relationships with anonymous players. Then there's the open-world stealth shooter Dishonored, from Lyon-based Arkane Studios, which mixes weird gothic machinery with rusted industrial cityscapes.

And Gears of War creator Epic Studios announced in December its plan to launch Fortnite, a post-apocalyptic strategy game in which you build a fortress then defend it against hordes of zombies. Yes, zombies will be back again in 2012. Some things never change.

But the big question remains what will those new Sony and Microsoft consoles look like? One guess is that they will resemble tablet PCs, designed to fit into a world where consumers want to take their favourite games, music and movies with them wherever they go.

But with the coming rise of smart TVs complete with built-in computer chips, and the growing power of smartphones and tablets, is there still a place for any sort of dedicated game platforms? It could be that 2012 will set the terms of the coming conflict.

Hong Kong University Makes Breakthrough in Gastrointestinal Treatment

Created: Dec 26 2011

In collaboration with Singapore researchers, CUHK Professor CHIU Wai Yan Philip performed the first two cases of Robotic assisted ESD for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong. (Chinese University of Hong Kong)

By Han Jie
Epoch Times Staff

The Chinese University of Hong Kong announced on Dec. 15 that it has achieved a major technological breakthrough and completed the world first human case series of robotic-assisted endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), which treats early gastric cancer.

CUHK Professor Philip Waiyan Chiu said on Dec. 15 that conventional treatment for gastric neoplasia involves resection and anastomosis (removing a diseased section of the intestine and sewing it shut), and carries certain risks of morbidity and mortality, while ESD is a new and effective technique for treatment of early stomach tumor.

Yet the major difficulty in performing ESD is that the design of traditional endoscope allows only single degree movements. Yet the newly designed robotic arms, set up jointly by CUHK, National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, can be attached to the ordinary endoscopes to facilitate the performance of complex endoscopic surgery by extending the degree of movement through the two robotic arms.

Currently there are only five cases of robotic-assisted ESD performed in humans worldwide. CUHK performed the first two cases of robotic-assisted ESD for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong.

CUHK said robotic-assisted ESD effectively reduces bleeding and infections and shortens the operation time. The two operations were successfully performed under general anesthesia, and the operation time was only 50 minutes for the first and 16 minutes for the second.

The researchers said that the new technology remains at the experimental stage; they hope it will be applied to clinical practice in five years. The researchers are also hoping to apply the robotic-assisted ESD technology to colon and rectal surgeries.

Gastrointestinal cancers are the most common cancers worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, gastric and colorectal cancers are the second- and third- most common causes of cancer-related deaths respectively, which amount to 1,500,000 deaths per year globally. Though advanced gastrointestinal cancers are hard to cure, early cancers have a better prognosis.

Eee Transformer Prime or iPad 3 or ....?

Quote:

I'm looking to get a tablet for class use... I will be able to get a lot of my books on .pdf and thus will not have to lug them all around. I also plan to take notes on it and review powerpoint lectures. My school uses a site that works best with internet explorer, so I have also considered getting an EEE PC for this.

The EEE transformer prime seems to be the best right now, and I like the attachable keyboard... having all that battery life will be great for long sessions cooped up in the library.

Basically I'm looking for something very portable and capable. I was leaning towards the iPad 2, but I know I'd be bummed if the 3 comes out soon... which appears to be so...?

1. aspect ratio
i prefer the ipad for viewing pdfs, especially in portrait mode. try the tablets out in the store to see what you think (just plug in "pdf" into google and you'll find something, usually a tax form comes up first).

2. eee pc vs. transformer prime
two different things. the eee pc is a computer with the windows operating system (and internet explorer). the transformer prime is a tablet with the android operating system (no internet explorer as far as i know).

3. battery life
the ipad has 10 hours + . how long are you going to be in the library? i primarily use the ipad, and usually can get through an entire day on campus without a charge. however, i sometimes bring the little plug along if i know it will be a long day. i rarely have to use it.

4. keyboard
the ipad works great with the apple keyboard + incase origami combination. it ends up being about the same weight and bulk as the asus, but the apple keyboard works with everything.

5. ipad 3
it will probably be out in a few months. that is a long time (in my opinion), but anyhow, there is always something new on the horizon. if you need it now, then get it. if not, then wait

6. browser
how much are you planning to use this website? you can bet i sure won't be planning my purchases around some stupid website.

TILTON, N.H. (AP) ? It's an opening salvo of the presidential campaign, minus actual presidential nominees.

Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a biting critique of Mitt Romney's policies Friday and the Republican came swiftly back at him ? a full-contact preview of what the general election might look like should Romney win the GOP nomination to challenge President Barack Obama.

All this, before a vote is cast in the Republican race, The Iowa caucuses, looming Jan. 3, are the first step in the voting to pick a Republican nominee.

In an opinion piece published in The Des Moines Register, Biden portrayed the Republican frontrunner as the purveyor of failed, retreaded economic ideas. Romney shot back that Biden and Obama live an economic "fantasyland" out of touch with the real world.

Biden's jabs mark a major escalation in Obama's re-election campaign and refocus his political team on Romney, the former Massachusetts governor whom Obama advisers have long considered his most likely opponent. And it switches Obama away from his just-concluded tax cut victory over House Republicans to the GOP presidential field just 12 days before the Iowa caucuses.

"Romney appears satisfied to settle for an economy in which fewer people succeed, while the majority of Americans are left to tread water or fall behind," Biden wrote.

The Obama team may be betting on Romney, but his Republican rivals were conceding no such ground.

Campaigning in South Carolina, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich derided Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate trying to come down and pretend to be a conservative. But I'm not going to say anything stronger than that. I'm going to focus on positive things."

Asked later how that wasn't being negative, Gingrich said: "I didn't criticize him. I described him accurately."

And he swiped at rival Ron Paul for wanting to shut overseas military bases, a stark departure from the Republican mainstream and one not bound to sit well in pro-military South Carolina. "The only person I know who is for a weaker military than Barack Obama is Ron Paul," Gingrich told 300 people outside a Columbia restaurant. "If we become isolationist, the world would become a more dangerous place overnight."

Rep. Michele Bachmann's campaign said Friday she would start radio and TV commercials in Iowa, her first since her straw poll victory in the state in August. In them, she stresses her Christian values and that she's "an Iowa girl from Waterloo."

Biden's words, meanwhile, summed up a running story line about Romney that Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party have been refining for months. The piece also was a direct rebuttal to Romney's recent claim he wants "an opportunity society" versus what he called Obama's "entitlement society."

Biden reiterated a major theme of Obama's re-election effort, one the president spelled out in a recent speech in Kansas where he declared that the middle class was at a make-or-break moment. In taking on Romney, Biden defined "opportunity" in his own terms.

"We believe deeply in opportunity ? that if you work hard and play by the rules, no opportunity should be out of reach," he wrote. "This is a fundamentally different vision than what the other side has proposed."

Romney, speaking at the Tilt'n Diner, quickly countered that it was Obama who is hurting the country and expressed astonishment that Biden would have the "chutzpah ... the delusion" to write such a piece.

"This president and his policies have made it harder on the American people and on the middle class," he said. "And I don't think they get it. I don't think they understand from fantasyland what's happening in real America. They need to get out to diners like this."

The timing, placement and direct response to Romney represented a remarkable early volley from the Obama camp, using the most potent voice next to the president himself to set a new signpost on the re-election season. And it signaled an aggressive strategy to challenge his GOP opposition and engage even though the Republican nomination could remain unsettled for months.

In the opinion piece, Biden said Romney's proposals for the economy "would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

"Romney also misleadingly suggests that the president and I are creating an 'Entitlement Society,' whereby government provides everything for its people without regard to merit, as opposed to what he calls an Opportunity Society,' where everything is merit-based and every man is left to fend for himself," Biden wrote.

In essentially placing its bets on Romney, the Obama camp elevated his stature in the race, particularly in Iowa where he is running neck-and-neck with Gingrich and Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Romney was clearly ready ? and eager ? to engage with the White House. While he generally has to be asked, or even pressed, to criticize Gingrich, he hit back at Biden at the first opportunity.

"I think they realize what's coming," he said. "I hope they're right. I hope I'm the nominee."

Romney aides said campaign days like this help him against his GOP rivals, positioning him as the candidate best able to take on Obama in the fall and addressing a top Republican goal: selecting a nominee who is electable against the president.

The Obama campaign also chose Iowa to deliver the Biden message because it is an epicenter of national politics and where it was sure to get intense attention.

Moreover, Iowa is a general election swing state that Democrat Al Gore won in 2000 but President George W. Bush won in 2004. Obama beat Republican John McCain in the state in 2008 by 8 percentage points. Biden's message clearly aimed for the state's general election voters as well.

Earlier this week, Romney accused Obama of deepening the economic crisis and backing policies that would redistribute wealth instead of creating equal opportunity for people to do well.

Romney said his policies would turn the U.S. into an "opportunity society" while Obama's vision for an "entitlement society" would make more people dependent on government welfare.

"The only entitlement we believe in is an America where if you work hard, you can get ahead," Biden wrote in the op-ed.

Biden's piece hinted at another line of attack on Romney ? that the former governor is a man of wealth and privilege. Biden, in his piece, stressed his own family's working class roots and how his father's pride was "put to the test when he found himself struggling to make ends meet."

Romney, by contrast, is the son of former American Motors Corp. chairman and Michigan Gov. George Romney. Romney also made his own fortune as a venture capitalist, a point Obama's Democratic surrogates have used to portray Romney as out of touch and elitist.

Jessica Simpson is pregnant, and put off her wedding as a result of that unexpected joy, but she's still planning on getting married to Eric Johnson next year.

She's been shopping for the big day in fact.

The expectant 31-year-old star was spotted visiting a Monique Lhuillier wedding boutique Sunday in L.A. Dresses in the store range from $3,000-20,000.

So is she planning to wed while pregnant?

Big Jessica Simpson Pic

Simpson and Eric Johnson got engaged on November 11, 2010. The wedding was pushed back after she got pregnant, but she's adamant it's still on.

After they've welcomed their little one.

"I didn't want to be stressed," she said. "Now when I get stressed it's like 50 times worse. I really want to enjoy that day, and now I get to have my baby with me."

"We were always going to wait [until] after the baby. We flirted around with different dates before I found out I was pregnant, and thankfully we didn't lock anything down. I want to enjoy the day… I'm glad we didn't make a deposit."

Seriously. Phew. How could she afford that kind of financial hit. It's not like she's getting paid $3 million to shed her baby weight or anything.

Lower asthma risk in chubby tots who slim down: study (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Overweight preschoolers who keep their extra weight as they grow have a greater asthma risk at the age of seven, but the baby fat doesn't seem to matter for children who later slim down, according to a study.

Researchers writing in Pediatrics found that of more than 2,000 Swedish children they followed to the age of eight, those who were overweight or obese at age seven were more likely to have asthma than their thinner peers.

By contrast, children who were heavy as toddlers or at age four, but not at age seven, were no more prone to asthma than children who'd always been of normal weight.

"High body mass index (BMI) during the first 4 years does not increase the risk of asthma at school age among children who have developed a normal weight by age seven," wrote Jessica Magnusson, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who led the study.

"However, high BMI at age seven years is associated with an increased risk of asthma and sensitization to inhalant allergens."

Body mass index is a measure of weight relative to height.

A number of studies have found that heavy children have a higher risk of asthma, or more severe symptoms, but whether the extra pounds are the cause remains unclear.

"We don't think we can say that overweight is causally associated with asthma -- that is, that overweight causes asthma," Magnusson said.

Overall, six percent of the eight-year-olds followed in the study had asthma, while 10 percent of the children who were overweight at age seven did.

The researchers considered other factors, such as the parents' history of allergies and whether a mother smoked during pregnancy. They found that being overweight at age seven was linked to a doubling in the risk of asthma.

That was true of seven-year-olds who'd been of normal weight earlier in life, as well as those who'd been heavy at age four.

At any age, there were about 300 children of the 2,000 who were overweight, but fewer were persistently heavy. Only some 122 remained overweight from the age of one to age seven.

So parents should feel reassured, Magnusson said, that those early extra pounds often do not last -- and that children whose weight normalizes may not have an increased asthma risk. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/tVwsye

Kansas drug prescription firm to add 620 jobs

OVERLAND PARK ? A mail-service drug prescription company in Overland Park has announced an expansion that will include adding 620 jobs to its current round of hiring, making the firm Johnson County?s fifth largest private employer.

OptumRx is expected to have about 2,100 employees at its mail and customer service center in 18 months, according to The Kansas City Star. After the expansion, the only private companies in the county that will be larger than Optum are Sprint, Garmin, Shawnee Mission Medical Center and Black & Veatch.

OptumRx has handled 48 million prescriptions since it opened its Overland Park facility in 2006. The 313,000-square-foot site was expected to process 13 million prescriptions this year. Company officials said about 450 of the new positions have been filled or are still available this year, and an additional 170 employees will be hired by 2013.

?We are adding employees in virtually every position, from entry-level to highly experienced, from shipper to pharmacist,? said Larry C. Renfro, CEO of Optum, the parent company of OptumRx.

Company officials announced the expansion Wednesday, emphasizing that entry-level positions, which start at $21,000 annually, require no previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry. The facility currently employs 200 pharmacists who earn salaries of more than $100,000 per year.

The industry referred to as pharmacy benefits manager is poised for continued growth, officials with the firm say. OptumRx, which is part of UnitedHealth Group, has 13 million customers and expects to fill $23 billion worth of prescriptions this year. Besides Overland Park, the firm?s other large mail service center is in Carlsbad, Calif.

?As the population ages and more of those individuals without insurance gain access to health care coverage, the industry will only grow,? Renfro said. ?And OptumRx is well-positioned to take advantage of that growth, with the help of our employees and partners here in Kansas.?

Migrant ship sinks off Indonesia; over 200 missing (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Rescuers searched for survivors Sunday after a wooden ship carrying about 250 asylum seekers, many of them from the Middle East, sank off Indonesia's main island of Java. Only 33 people have been rescued so far, an official said.

Four fishing boats searched for the more than 200 missing passengers who were attempting to reach Australia, but bad weather and 4-meter- (13-foot-) high waves were hampering the efforts, said Lt. Alwi Mudzakir, a maritime police official who was heading the rescue operation.

"We fear that a large number of victims will not be rescued," he said.

Police blamed Saturday's accident on overloading, telling Indonesia's official Antara news agency that the vessel appeared to have been carrying more than twice its capacity.

Mudzakir said some of those who were rescued told authorities that they were determined to seek asylum to Australia.

He said about 250 asylum seekers ? mostly from Afghanistan, but also from Iraq, Iran and Turkey ? were taken by four buses from Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, on Thursday by an unidentified group. The group promised to get the asylum seekers to Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, without legal immigration documents.

One of the survivors, Esmat Adine, told Antara that the ship started rocking from side to side, triggering widespread panic.

Because people were so tightly packed, they had nowhere to go, said the 24-year-old Afghan migrant.

"That made the boat even more unstable, and eventually it sank," he said. Adine said that he and others survived by clinging to parts of the broken vessel until they were picked up by local fishermen.

He estimated that more than 40 children were on the ship. Mudzakir said that two children and a woman were among the 33 who had been rescued.

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, has more than 18,000 islands and thousands of miles (kilometers) of unpatrolled coastline, making it a key transit point for smuggling migrants.

Last month, a ship carrying about 70 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan capsized off the southern coast of Central Java province, and at least eight people died.

Judge gives Bonds house arrest, then delays it (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Barry Bonds will remain free while he appeals his conviction for giving misleading testimony before a grand jury.

A federal judge handed Bonds a sentence of 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation and 250 hours of community service on Friday ? then delayed the sentence pending an appeal likely to take a year or more.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston also put on hold a $4,000 fine against Bonds for his obstruction of justice conviction arising from a grand jury appearance eight years ago.

Prosecutors wanted the home run king to spend 15 months in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella argued that home confinement wasn't punishment enough, "for a man with a 15,000 square foot house with all the advantages." Bonds lives on an estate in Beverly Hills.

Well-wishers hugged the 47-year-old Bonds in the hallway outside the courtroom after the hearing was over. He declined to speak in court.

A jury convicted Bonds in April of purposely answering questions about steroids with rambling non sequiturs in an attempt to mislead a grand jury investigating sports doping in December 2003. Bonds' trial jury failed to reach a verdict on three other charges accusing Bonds of lying when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs and when he denied receiving injections from someone other than his doctor.

Prosecutors in September dropped those deadlocked charges, giving up on another trial.

Bonds, Major League Baseball's career leader with 762 home runs, now has 14 days to file his intention to appeal his conviction.

Bonds is the highest-profile defendant, and the last, to come out of the government's investigation of the steroids distribution ring built around the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, founded by Victor Conte.

Besides the former National League MVP, 10 people were convicted of various charges. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.

Bonds was one of two former baseball superstars to stand trial in doping-related cases this year. The trial of pitcher Roger Clemens was halted after just two days in July because prosecutors used inadmissible evidence. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has set a new trial for April 17.

RIM activist renews call for leadership change (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Research In Motion faced renewed calls for a change in its leadership on Thursday, hours ahead of the quarterly results that could fuel criticism over the BlackBerry maker's poor performance and sagging share price.

Jaguar Financial, an activist shareholder that has asked the BlackBerry maker to sell itself in whole or parts, once again called on two of RIM's independent directors to push for a separation of the roles of chairman and chief executive.

For months, Jaguar and other dissident shareholders have pushed for the replacement of Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, who share both top roles. The two are RIM's largest shareholders and the most powerful figures in its management.

"It strains credibility to believe that a CEO requires the title of chairman to sell RIM products but the RIM directors have apparently bought into this unconvincing rationale," said Jaguar, which has claimed support of investors that hold about 8 percent of the stock.

Shareholder discontent with RIM centers around its poor performance in the face of stiff competition from Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad, and devices powered by Google's Android system. The BlackBerry's market share has been steadily eroding, while the PlayBook, RIM's late entry in the tablet market, has generated anemic sales.

The latest call for change comes ahead of RIM's third-quarter results announcement, due after the close of regular trading hours.

RIM has already warned the market that it will take a big hit on its unsold PlayBooks in this quarter and that it will ship fewer smartphones in the current quarter than in the third quarter, which just ended. The warning has pushed RIM's share price to its lowest since 2004.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Graph on RIM's 2012 EPS http://link.reuters.com/tyn55s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"At this point we believe investors have lost faith in the ability of the RIM management team to carry out a proper game plan to restore value," said Jaguar CEO Vic Alboini in a statement.

"Jaguar believes that the road map to value restoration lies in a sale of RIM whether as a whole or in separate parts."

The group called on RIM to sell its handset business and monetize its patent portfolio, while retaining its service business under new leadership.

Jaguar argues that RIM has lost its ability to compete in the consumer hardware segment. A sale or spin-off of the business would help restore value to shareholders, it says.

Jaguar, which invests in underperforming and undervalued companies, sees RIM's service business as RIM's most valuable business given its recurring revenue and high margins.

In its statement, Jaguar called on two of RIM's independent directors, Barbara Stymiest and Roger Martin, to initiate some drastic changes in governance at the beleaguered smartphone maker.

Stymiest, a former chief operating officer at Royal Bank of Canada, also served as TSX Group's chief executive. Martin is the dean at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

"They should step up and take the lead in making dramatic governance change or else resign from the board if they are unable or unwilling to initiate appropriate governance changes," Jaguar said in a statement.

Shares of RIM, which closed at $15.08 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, were down 12 cents at $14.97 in early trading on Thursday. Its Toronto-listed shares were down 21 Canadian cents at C$15.48.

'Cold shutdown': Japan reactor declared stable

Updated at 6:23 a.m. ET

TOKYO -- The tsunami-devastated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant has reached a "cold shutdown" and is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation, Japan's prime minister?said Friday.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's announcement marks a milestone nine months after the March 11 tsunami sent three reactors at the plant into meltdowns in the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.?It is a?crucial step toward lifting evacuation orders and closing the plant.

"Even if unforeseeable incidents happen, the situation is such that radiation levels on the boundary of the plant can now be maintained at a low level," Noda said. "Now that we have achieved stability in the reactors, a major concern for the nation has been resolved."

However,?experts noted that the plant remains vulnerable. Its surroundings are contaminated by radiation and closing the plant safely will take 30 or more years.

'Our battle is not over'
NBC News reported that there are still sporadic reports of leaks of contaminated water from the site.?

"There are many issues that remain," Noda added. "Our battle is not over."

Noda's?announcement means officials?can now start discussing whether to allow some evacuees to return to less-contaminated areas ? although a 12-mile zone around the plant is expected to remain off limits for years to come. The crisis displaced some 100,000 people.

A cold shutdown normally means a nuclear reactor's coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and its reactor core is at a temperature below 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), making it impossible for a chain reaction to take place.

According to?plant operator?TEPCO, temperature gauges inside the Fukushima reactors show the pressure vessel is at around 158 degrees??F (70 C). The government also says the amount of radiation now being released around the plant is at or below 1 millisievert per year ? equivalent to the annual legal exposure limit for ordinary citizens before the crisis began.

Akira Yamaguchi, a nuclear physicist at Osaka University, said that the government's definition of cold shutdown is disputable.

"But what's most important right now is that there aren't any massive radiation leaks any more," he said.

Winter woes?
Putting longer-term issues aside, he warned that much of the backup equipment installed at the plant since the crisis began is makeshift and may break down. He said winter cold could test their strength.

Tamotsu Baba, the mayor of?evacuated Naimie town,?told a?press conference Friday that it was "hard to accept" Noda's declaration.

"We still feel a major distrust towards the government," he added.

Located 150 miles northeast of Tokyo, the plant was wrecked by a huge earthquake and a?tsunami that exceeded 45 feet in some areas, which knocked out its cooling systems, triggering meltdowns and radiation leaks.

NBC News reported that?the extraction of more than 3,000 fuel rods from the site, most likely?involving robotic cranes, is due to begin next year. High-powered water sprays will be used to decontaminate?roads and other infrastructure in nearby towns from early next month.

IndyCar: Pole created 'non-survivable' head injury

Dan Wheldon was killed when his head hit a post in the fencing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, contact that created a "non-survivable injury" to the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner.

IndyCar officials released their findings Thursday of the Oct. 16 accident in the season finale. Wheldon was killed in an early 15-car accident when his car launched into the catchfence.

The reports finds several factors contributed to what became a "perfect storm," and no one reason could be singled out as the sole cause of the accident. IndyCar found it is "impossible to determine with certainty that the result would have been any different if one or more of the factors did not exist."

The race had a season-high 34 cars and was held on a high-banked oval, and IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard says the size of the field and the banking itself were not solely responsible for the accident.

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Buoyed by renewed pledges of customer support, TransCanada Corp said on Thursday it not only wants to proceed with its stalled Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline but to undertake a $600 million expansion and extension. The company is betting its proposed expansion of the original $7 billion plan to carry Alberta oil sands crude to the Gulf Coast will hammer home Keystone's economic benefits to politicians and trump the environmental worries that have prompted a lengthy delay in its U.S. approval process.

Canada seeks a way to limit health-spending increases

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's top finance officials will try at a meeting next week to come to grips with the thorny problem of how to limit the rising costs of the country's universal public health-care system in the face of an aging population. Health care in Canada is a responsibility of the provinces, and since 2004 the federal government has been increasing by 6 percent a year the amount of money it provides them to help pay for the system. It has committed to keep on doing so through 2016, and since 2006 it has increased its annual payments to C$27 billion ($26 billion) from C$19 billion.

Canada set for tamer growth as factories struggle

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian factory sales slumped in October after three months of gains, confirming suspicions the final stretch to the end of the year will see a slowdown from the brisk economic growth of earlier months.
