Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot (Virgin Mobile)

The Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot for Virgin Mobile ($79.99) is a lot like a buffet?you get as much data as you want, though it isn't particularly top-quality. It's a bulky mobile hotspot that hooks into Sprint's slow 3G network, as well as its abandoned 4G WiMAX network, to provide a wireless connection for up to five devices. And while neither of those networks will get you speeds on par with 4G LTE, you're paying a whole lot less. For as little as $35 per month, you can have access to all the 4G WiMAX data you can handle. If you live in the coverage area and use lots of data, it's definitely worth considering.

Pricing and Performance
We have a full review of the?Overdrive Pro on Sprint, and the Virgin model looks and acts very similarly. I'll focus on the pricing?and data speeds on Virgin, as well as comparisons with other contract-free hotspots, in this review.

There are two big reasons to consider the Overdrive Pro on Virgin: pricing and unlimited data. The hotspot itself costs $79.99, which is average. But there's a lot of value to be found in Virgin's Broadband2Go plans. For $35 per month, you get 2GB of 3G data. $55 per month gets you 5GB. There's also a daily plan, where?$5 per day gets you 200MB of 3G data. Those prices are okay, but here's where it gets really good: Each of those plans comes with unlimited 4G WiMAX data. That means you can use the Overdrive Pro as much as you want for as little as $35 per month.

Unlike Clear, which provides unlimited data on the same WiMAX network as Virgin, here there's no cap on download or upload speeds. But there's still a catch?Virgin claims that speeds may be throttled after 10GB of usage per month. But even then, speeds are capped at 2Mbps, which isn't bad.

AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have higher-quality 3G networks, as well as much faster 4G LTE networks, but those plans average around $50 per month for 5GB of data; you can burn through all of that before you finish watching a season of Breaking Bad on Netflix. Theoretically, with unlimited data, you can even use the Overdrive Pro as your primary home Internet connection.

As we discovered in our annual Fastest Mobile Networks?report, Sprint has the slowest 3G speeds of all the carriers we tested.?So if you don't live in a WiMAX coverage area, you may want to rethink your options. But if you are covered by WiMAX, you can expect speeds that are much faster than Sprint's 3G, though still not on a par with 4G LTE. To find out if you're covered,?check here.

In testing the Overdrive Pro, I saw average download speeds of around 3Mbps, which isn't bad. It should make for relatively smooth browsing and media streaming. Uploads, on the other hand, never made it past 0.4Mbps, which is rather slow, and reception isn't great either. But if you can tolerate the slower speeds, it's a major relief to know that you have unlimited data at your disposal. And unlike the Clear Spot Voyager?, which only supports WiMAX, the Overdrive Pro gets you a finite amount of 3G data per month as well. Again, this data is very slow, but it's good to have if you're traveling outside of the WiMAX coverage zone.

The Overdrive Pro's battery was good four 4 hours and 10 minutes of 4G streaming in my tests, which is okay, but not great.

Conclusions
The Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot is a good choice if you're looking for a way to stay connected without running out of data or breaking the bank. You'll get more reliable, faster speeds with 4G LTE from AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, but you'll also be paying a lot more. The Clear Spot Voyager?lacks 3G support, but it also gets you unlimited data on the same 4G WiMAX network as the Overdrive Pro. It's smaller and more portable, with much better battery life, but it lacks the Overdrive Pro's external display. The Freedom Spot Photon from FreedomPop is another interesting choice. It too hooks into the same 4G WiMAX network, and actually gets you your data for free, though only in limited quantities. It's worth a look if you only need a hotspot to get online occasionally.

Atheists around world suffer persecution, discrimination: report

GENEVA (Reuters) - Atheists and other religious skeptics suffer persecution or discrimination in many parts of the world and in at least seven nations can be executed if their beliefs become known, according to a report issued on Monday.

The study, from the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), showed that "unbelievers" in Islamic countries face the most severe - sometimes brutal - treatment at the hands of the state and adherents of the official religion.

But it also points to policies in some European countries and the United States which favor the religious and their organizations and treat atheists and humanists as outsiders.

The report, "Freedom of Thought 2012", said "there are laws that deny atheists' right to exist, curtail their freedom of belief and expression, revoke their right to citizenship, restrict their right to marry."

Other laws "obstruct their access to public education, prohibit them from holding public office, prevent them from working for the state, criminalize their criticism of religion, and execute them for leaving the religion of their parents."

The report was welcomed by Heiner Bielefeldt, United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, who said in a brief introduction there was little awareness that atheists were covered by global human rights agreements.

The IHEU - which links over 120 humanist, atheist and secular organizations in more than 40 countries - said it was issuing the report to mark the U.N.'s Human Rights Day on Monday.

According to its survey of some 60 countries, the seven where expression of atheist views or defection from the official religion can bring capital punishment are Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

The 70-page report lists no recent cases of actual execution for "atheism" -- but researchers say the offence is often subsumed into other charges.

In a range of other countries - such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait and Jordan - publication of atheist or humanist views on religion are totally banned or strictly limited under laws prohibiting "blasphemy".

In many of these countries, and others like Malaysia, citizens have to register as adherents of a small number officially-recognized religions -- which normally include no more than Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam.

Atheists and humanists are thereby forced to lie to obtain their official documents without which it is impossible to go to university, receive medical treatment, travel abroad or drive.

In Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin and North America, countries which identify themselves secular give privileges to or favor Christian churches in providing education and other public services, the IHEU said.

In Greece and Russia, the Orthodox Church is fiercely protected from criticism and is given pride of place on state occasions, while in Britain bishops of the Church of England have automatic seats in the upper house of parliament.

While freedom of religion and speech is protected in the United States, the report said, a social and political climate prevails "in which atheists and the non-religious are made to feel like lesser Americans, or non-Americans."

In at least seven U.S. states, constitutional provisions are in place that bar atheists from public office and one state, Arkansas, has a law that bars an atheist from testifying as a witness at a trial, the report said.

Obama, Dems on top again in latest poll on ?fiscal cliff? crisis

Facebook (FB) announced on Tuesday that it will begin opening Facebook Messenger to consumers who do not have a Facebook account, starting in countries like India and South Africa, and later rolling out the service in the United States and Europe.?This is a belated acknowledgement of a staggering strategic mistake Facebook made two years ago. That is when the messaging app competition was still wide open and giants like Facebook or Google (GOOG) could have entered the competition. WhatsApp, the leading messaging app firm, had just 1 million users as late as December 2009. By the end of 2010, that number had grown to 10 million. Right now, it likely tops 200 million, though there is no current official number

Q&A: What would it mean to raise Medicare's eligibility age?

WASHINGTON ? As they debate ways to control the federal deficit, President Obama and congressional Republicans have both acknowledged the need to rein in federal spending on healthcare programs such as Medicare, which provides health insurance to about 50 million elderly and disabled Americans.

Among the leading proposals to slow Medicare spending ? a key ingredient of a budget deal ? is to raise the eligibility age for the program, an option frequently championed by conservatives.

Here are answers to some basic questions about the concept and its potential effects:

How would raising the Medicare eligibility age work?

Most proposals envision gradually raising the eligibility age from 65 to 67 over a decade or longer. Lawmakers agreed in the 1980s to a similar phase-in to raise the Social Security eligibility age, a process that is still underway.

This idea was discussed during the 2011 budget negotiations between the president and congressional Republicans and was championed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee.

How much money would that save?

That depends on how the shift is structured. Last year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that a proposal to phase in the rise in eligibility over 13 years starting in 2014 would save the federal government about $113 billion over the next decade.

That makes the proposal one of the single biggest money savers at a time when Medicare spending is projected to rise from $600 billion a year to more than $1 trillion a year by 2021, driven in large part by retiring baby boomers who will join Medicare in coming years.

Proponents of raising the eligibility age also note that it would encourage more Americans to continue working through their mid- to late 60s, adding to economic growth, though the CBO concluded the effects of this would be modest.

What would happen to these seniors?

If the new healthcare law is fully implemented in 2014, all Americans will be guaranteed health coverage, so seniors who do not qualify for Medicare when they are 65 would still be able to get health insurance.

They would just have to purchase it on their own or get it from an employer, much like younger workers today. The law limits how much more insurers can charge older consumers and prohibits insurance companies from charging more to people with preexisting medical conditions.

Those new protections mark a major change from today, when it can be difficult for consumers in their 60s to get a health insurance plan on their own.

Nonetheless, some seniors would probably end up paying more for health insurance than they do with Medicare, because private health plans are often more expensive, the CBO says. Budget analysts also estimated that about 5% would become uninsured.

What would raising the eligibility age mean for everyone else?

It could mean higher costs.

Younger Medicare beneficiaries are typically healthier and less expensive than older people on the program. That spreads risk and helps control Medicare premiums.

If healthier beneficiaries leave the program as the eligibility age is raised, that would leave a sicker population behind, necessitating higher premiums for beneficiaries to cover the higher medical costs.

Are there other proposals to control Medicare spending?

Yes. Some policymakers favor cutting Medicare payments to hospitals and other providers. Lawmakers have also discussed charging higher premiums to wealthy seniors. And many Republicans would like to overhaul Medicare by giving beneficiaries vouchers to shop for private health insurance.

Buzzkill: Feds fire warning shot over pot legalization

Washington State's new law makes it legal for adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana, but some speculate the federal government will prosecute those who use marijuana on federal land because federal law prohibits marijuana use. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

With marijuana possession now legal in Washington state, and soon in Colorado too, residents face a confusing mishmash of federal and state laws when it comes to whether and where they can get high.?

That's because the federal government still bans pot growing and possession, regardless of what state laws say.

Last night, just hours before legislation legalizing pot in her state went into effect,?U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan of Washington warned residents that "growing, selling or possessing any amount of marijuana remains illegal under federal law."

Her words could be a buzzkill for Washington's pot-lovers, yet at midnight -- the moment Washington's law went into effect -- marijuana smokers lit up beneath Seattle's Space Needle, reveling in the joy of living in a state that allows possession of pot, ?even if state law still says it is illegal to smoke it in public.

"It's too good to be just for the young," Pat Edmonson, 67, of Whidbey Island, Wash., said as she smoked marijuana in Seattle's City Center with a crowd of about 100 others who were lighting up, despite the no-pot-in-public rule.?

State leaders have appealed to the Justice Department for guidance.

Jim Seida / NBC News

Pat Edmonson, 67, of Whidbey Island, Wash., was in Seattle with her daughter to celebrate the legalization of the possession of marijuana.

Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes encouraged celebrants to enjoy their highs inside closed doors.

"I think that they should acknowledge this newfound right," he told NPR station KUOW. "I think they should celebrate in the privacy of their homes if they choose to do so. And be thankful that we?re no longer arresting some 10,000 Washingtonians a year in the state of Washington and spending well over $100 million in law enforcement resources on that."

In Colorado, a measuring legalizing marijuana use and possession for those over 21 will go into effect next month. But one place where federal laws will have an impact: college campuses.

"In order not to lose federal funds, we need to comply with federal law," University of Colorado at Boulder spokeswoman Malinda Hiller-Huey told The Denver Post.

College students on campuses across the state will be issued criminal tickets if they are found with marijuana, The Post reported. Off-campus, however,?students of legal age will be able to grow and use small amounts of marijuana, per the new amendment, according to the University of Colorado.

While Colorado's new weed measure doesn't have any provisions about driving under the influence built into it, Washington state will have a zero-tolerance policy.

"We've had decades of studies and experience with alcohol," Washington State Patrol spokesman Dan Coon told The Associated Press. "Marijuana is new, so it's going to take some time to figure out how the courts and prosecutors are going to handle it. But the key is impairment: We will arrest drivers who drive impaired, whether it be drugs or alcohol."

It's unclear whether the Justice Department will try to stop the decriminalization of pot in Washington and Colorado.?The laws in both states allow adults 21 and older to possess a small amount of marijuana, which will be sold in state-licensed stores and taxed heavily, potentially bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars a year for school, health care and government needs.

Before the vote passed in his state, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper acknowledged the legal challenges his state would face.?

"It's probably going to pass, but it's still illegal on a federal basis. If we can't make it legal here because of federal laws, we certainly want to decriminalize it,? he told NBC?s Brian Williams.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia already have laws allowing for the medical use of marijuana, according to the National Council of Legislatures. The measures in Washington and Colorado go a step further,?explicitly allowing people to smoke pot for more than just medicinal purposes.

NBC News' Pete Williams, Isolde Raftery and Jim Seida contributed to this report.

Man held in NYC subway rider's death

By Jonathan Dienst, Shimon Prokupecz and Tracie Strahan, NBCNewYork.com

Police have a 30-year-old former deli worker in custody believed to be the suspect who pushed a subway rider off the platform and into the path of an oncoming train at 49th Street after an argument.

NBC 4 New York obtained exclusive images of the man being questioned by authorities in the deadly push

A law enforcement official told NBC 4 New York the man?is suspected of pushing 58-year-old Ki-Suk Han off the platform at the N, Q, R station Monday afternoon. Han was hit by a southbound Q train and died.

Witnesses told police the suspect was mumbling to himself before he and Han began arguing on the platform.?

A bystander recorded part of the fight between the two men and turned the video over to police, who released it to the public Monday night, and received several tips. The man who allegedly pushed Han is heard cursing and saying, in substance, "Leave me alone... stand in line, wait for the R train and that's it."

Related: NY Post photo of death draws outrage

He then pushed Han onto the tracks, police said. Han tried to climb back up onto the platform but died after getting trapped between the train and the platform's edge.?

A law enforcement official tells NBC 4 New York that co-workers from a nearby deli where the suspect works tipped off police that their colleague might be the subway pusher after they recognized his voice from video.

Witness Patrick Gomez, who was in the station, says he heard a "thud that didn't sound normal" when the train pulled into the station.

"People are just standing there in fear and shock, not really knowing what's going on," he said. "Some people started running out of the platform, others just stood there."

He says police evacuated the platform within minutes.

Subway pushes are unusual. Among the more high-profile was the January 1999 death of Kendra Webdale. A former mental patient admitted he shoved her to her death.

Following that, the state Legislature passed Kendra's Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren't a threat to safety.

Congress, Obama playing with dynamite, CEOs say of "fiscal cliff"

BOSTON (Reuters) - Corporate America is raising the volume of its plea that the U.S. government avert a year-end "fiscal cliff" that could send the nation back into recession, but chief executives aren't pushing the panic button just yet.

With a heated election season in the rear-view mirror, executives are calling on the White House and congressional leaders to head off a self-imposed deadline that could bring $600 billion in spending cuts and higher taxes early in 2013 if they are unable to reach a deal on cutting the federal budget deficit.

The Business Roundtable on Tuesday kicked off a print, radio and online ad campaign on which it plans to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars featuring the chiefs of Honeywell International Inc , Xerox Corp and United Parcel Service Inc calling on lawmakers to resolve the issue.

One of the more dramatic warnings of the consequences of allowing the U.S. economy to go over the fiscal cliff came from Honeywell CEO David Cote.

"If the last debt ceiling discussion was playing with fire, this time they're playing with nitroglycerin," Cote said in an interview. "If they go off the cliff, I think it would spark a recession that's a lot bigger than economists think. Some think it would just be a small fire. I think it could turn into a conflagration."

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the U.S. economy would contract 0.5 percent in 2013 if the government fails to stop the budget cuts and tax increases - far below the 2 percent growth economists currently forecast.

A failure in Washington to solve the crisis by the year's end could prompt major companies to curtail investment plans, said Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext , operator of the New York Stock Exchange.

"We simply won't be investing in the United States. We will be investing elsewhere where we have more certainty of the outcome," Niederauer said in an interview.

About a dozen top U.S. CEOs, including General Electric Co's Jeff Immelt, Aetna Inc's Mark Bertolini, American Express Co's Ken Chenault and Dow Chemical Co's Andrew Liveris are scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

The four are members of "Fix the Debt," an ad-hoc lobbying organization that this week launched an advertising campaign that advocates long-term debt reduction.

UNCERTAINTY FACTOR

Bank of America Corp CEO Brian Moynihan said on Tuesday that worries about the cliff have companies holding off on spending.

"That uncertainty continues to hold back the recovery," Moynihan said, speaking at an investor conference in New York.

Sandy Cutler, CEO of manufacturer Eaton Corp , shared his concern.

"Until we solve the fiscal issues (in the United States and Europe), you're not going to get back to normal GDP growth," Cutler told investors on Tuesday.

CEOs are not alone in this worry. The CBO report warned that failure to reach a deal could push the U.S. unemployment rate up to 9.1 percent, the highest since July 1991. It is currently 7.9 percent.

Obama and the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives have signaled a more conciliatory tone since last week's election, when Obama soundly defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney, whose party retained a majority in the House.

Wilbur Ross, an investor known for taking stakes in distressed companies, is bracing for higher tax rates in 2013.

"We, like many people, have been trying to utilize gains this year. It does seem that the probability is that rates will go up," Ross said in an interview with Reuters Insider. "We don't have a "for sale" sign on anything. But we are mindful that there is a benefit to concluding things this year rather than next.

NO SIGNS OF PANIC

Concerns about the cliff have not prompted customers to cancel orders, though they have added to an overall level of uneasiness that has companies wary of making large capital purchases or hiring significant numbers of new workers.

"We haven't seen the panicking, like, 'I'm not going to order something because of the fiscal cliff,'" said Steve Shawley, chief financial officer of heating and cooling systems maker Ingersoll Rand Plc . "Customers are being very judicious with their orders."

Likewise, JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon last month told investors he did not expect the negotiations to hurt lending in the fourth quarter.

"The fiscal cliff isn't going to change us," Dimon said, referring to JPMorgan's commercial bank, which loans money to businesses. The bank's investment banking side could be more vulnerable if the debate makes investors jittery, he allowed.

WEAPONS, MEDICINES IN THE CROSS-HAIRS

The defense and healthcare sectors are the most vulnerable to the fiscal cliff, as they face the threat of sequestration -- automatic, across-the-board cuts to their funding.

Markers of weapons systems note that they have long been preparing for declining sales as the United States winds down two long warns in Iraq and Afghanistan. The industry has already shed tens of thousands of jobs and closed facilities.

Lockheed Martin Corp's new president and chief operating officer, Marillyn Hewson, told analysts on Monday her company had been preparing for tighter defense budgets for years, even before the sequestration deal.

"We aren't going to see a major change," said Hewson. "We've been very proactive as a leadership team in taking actions in recent years to address our cost structure, to look at how we can make our product more affordable."

Automatic cuts to the federal budget could reduce federal health spending by $21.5 billion in 2013, potentially affecting everything from Medicare to the Food and Drug Administration, according to an analysis by PwC's Health Research Institute.

Vincent Forlenza, the CEO of Beckton Dickinson & Co , said the labs he supplies have held off on buying new instruments because of the threat of spending cuts.

"If we don't get to a deal we will have another year of paralysis and putting off research," Forlenza said. "The impact of uncertainty on the (National Institutes of Health) budget is causing our research customers to put off research."

Microsoft Surface Display Shoot-Out: Does It Beat the iPad?

The new Windows tablets, led by Microsoft's Surface, provide a third major family of tablets for consumers and the computing world. The significance and stakes are enormous because tablets are among the most important developments in computing and consumer products in the last 20 years. Like Google's Android tablets, the Windows tablets will be made by many different manufacturers. And just like Google's Nexus, which provides reference designs for the Android product line, Microsoft is producing its own Surface tablets for the Windows product line. More »

Debt Consolidation And Types Of Bankruptcy ? How To Apply For ...

Choosing Between Bankruptcy And Debt Consolidation

When contemplating filing for bankruptcy, do not overlook the option of seeking a debt consolidation plan to pay off outstanding balances on the bills. Understand, there is a difference between debt consolidation and a consolidation loan, where debt consolidation can often remove late payment fees and penalties while providing a way of paying off the principal loans at a lower monthly payment.

Going through a loan consolidation loan specialist is also cheaper than bankruptcy procedures and your debts can be eliminated, while also stopping most creditor from harassing debtors for payments. They big difference is that with a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the creditors have to accept the court?s repayment plan, where in a consolidation plan a lender can refuse to participate.

With debt consolidation, agreeable lenders will calculate the balance owed without most late payment and penalty charges, bringing the total down. Most are willing to do this to insure they receive the majority of debt from the debtor without having to have the court proceedings.

Most creditors also understand that once in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, it is a short step for the debtor to take into Chapter 7, and if the financial obligations become too much, the creditor may receive nothing for the amount that is owed.

Loan consolidation is a viable option to filing bankruptcy, a consolidation loan is not always the best route to take. First, not all creditors will erase the penalties and late fees and the length of the loan is probably going to make the total payoff considerably higher, depending on the loan amount and the interest rate.

Determining The Types Of Bankruptcy For The Individual

Persons overwhelmed by debt, for many reasons may consider filing for bankruptcy, but worry about their future credit report as well as assets they might have. Deciding to take the step into bankruptcy is not usually made lightly and determining if it is even necessary is not a decision to be made without expert help. There are several types of bankruptcy to choose from.

People with serious financial problems can usually arrange a meeting with a personal bankruptcy lawyer to first determine if bankruptcy is an option and then, which type of bankruptcy would be better for their situation, or most agreeable to the court. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is typically field by persons with few assets and a lot of debt. Low income or unsteady income levels also typically accompany Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows debtors to arrange through the court to pay their bills, and generally the folks will have several past due payments on car payments, mortgages and utility bills. While the debtor will be responsible for all regular payments according to their original agreement, past due payments will be paid through a payment plan approved by and administered by the court.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy also allows the court trustee to seize assets above the exempt amount and arrange for their sale with the proceeds going towards paying off the creditors prior to the remainder of the debt being discharged by the court. During Chapter 13 bankruptcy typically there are no assets to be liquidated as the past due payments and other bills can be placed into the payment plan administered by the court.

After helping thousands of clients and discharging millions of dollars in debt, the bankruptcy attorneys at Legal Helpers have the background to explain your alternatives and suggest a solution to your financial difficulties.

Raritania: Of Genre Fiction and Literary Fiction

One of the debates currently roiling the section of the blogosphere devoted to science fiction is the one regarding the relative standing of genre and literary fiction - a now-ancient argument into which Arthur Krystal's essay in the New Yorker back in May, and a follow-up this past month, have breathed new life.

Krystal's position is the traditional one, that literary fiction is superior to genre fiction; the former art, the latter easy entertainment. In the later piece he concedes that the term genre should not be regarded as an epithet, that hybridization of literary fiction and genre fiction does happen, and that quality "comes in different forms" (there being well-written genre fiction and badly written literature) - but without altering the existence of the divide.

This rather unoriginal distinction also strikes me as unsatisfying, not least because of what these two labels happen to entail.

As I see it a genre is a body of fiction unified by a certain commonality of tropes and concerns. As a genre develops a canon of classic and founding works accumulates, and a sense of tradition develops among both the writers and their audience, the self-awareness of which is reflected in dedicated writers and fan organizations, and specialized publishers connecting the two.

The term literature is essentially an honorific applied to certain especially worthy works of fiction. The most basic criteria are a work's standing out in some way, its innovating significantly, or providing something aesthetically or intellectually or dramatically richer than the "trite-and-true" as Arthur Krystal puts it.

The two definitions do not seem to me mutually exclusive. There is no good reason why a work cannot be "genre," and at the same time, a piece of literature. Perhaps the most obvious reason why this is not more widely appreciated is the simplistic equation of genre with formula in the minds of many critics. It is, of course, indisputable that genres do have formulas - but not all genre work is formulaic. Certainly those founding works which create the formula cannot be looked at that way. (Can one seriously speak of, for instance, Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest as a mere formula novel, any more than they would Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice - a work massively imitated for two centuries?) Every genre also includes works which do not lend themselves to transformation into a formula. (The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, for instance, is a classic spy novel that has not spawned legions of imitators, for reasons which should be immediately obvious to anyone familiar with it.) Equally, it is not the case that a work's using certain well-established tropes, or working within a popular tradition, necessarily rules out its rising above the "trite-and-true" to offer the sense of "felt life" by which Krystal sets so much store. (M. John Harrison's The Centauri Device, for instance, deals brilliantly with concerns hardly specific to the space opera - just as Shakespeare's Hamlet is a revenge tragedy of the sort that was such a pop theater entertainment in its day, and at the same time much, much more.)

A second, reinforcing explanation is the existence of conflicting ideas about what makes a book worthwhile enough to be considered literature - with the uncertainty most directly affecting recent works, given the absence of received opinion, the uncertainty about what will manage to endure. Inseparable from this is a certain amount of snobbery. Certain kinds of accomplishment, certain techniques, certain themes are celebrated, and others denigrated. The tendency in recent decades has been to reward authors who favor character over plot or idea; who are conspicuously stylish rather than merely skillful, and opt for narrative modes which present stories in ambiguous, subjectivity-emphasizing ways, over clarity-focused straightforwardness; who engage with matters of epistemological uncertainty and identity over concern with the material dimensions of life.

It needs hardly be repeated here that the results of these attitudes have been unfavorable to science fiction, even in comparison with other popular genres - unsurprisingly given that it is a fiction of ideas which has emphasized the presentation of exotic content over the exotic presentation of the mundane. I have at times wondered if the disregard has not brought science fiction advantages as well as disadvantages (there are costs to being too "respectable"), but there is no doubt in my mind that contemporary literature has been the poorer for it.

True or False? Pay Attention to Structure to Tell if a Story is Made Up

True or False? Pay Attention to a Story's Structure and Detect Whether It's Made UpPsychologists and psychotherapists have long relied on the power of narrative storytelling to help their patients make sense of their world. In fact, it's been said that we are our narratives. For evidence that this may be true, pay attention to how people shape their stories about themselves. As it turns out, there is a big difference between the way we narrate events that have really happened to us and those we've invented.

It would seem reasonable to assume that memories, like stories, have a beginning, a middle, and an end. But reason doesn't have much of a role in guiding memory. Avinoam Sapir is a former Israeli police officer, a lie- detection expert, and the developer of Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN), a technique designed to interpret deception in written statements. Sapir notes that true stories drawn from real memories aren't typically narrated in chronological order; that's not the way the brain organizes them. The more dramatic the story, the less chronologic its structure. Why? Because our emotions guide our memories. The more powerfully we experience an event, the more likely we are to make it the first thing we talk about, filling in the less emotionally fraught details later.

That's not to say that any story that doesn't start with high drama is a fabrication. But truthful stories?though they may not be told in chronological order?will still contain three distinct stages: a prologue, a main event section, and an epilogue.

The Prologue

Whether it contains details from the beginning or the end of the story, the prologue sets the scene for the main event. This part of the story is usually light on detail when someone is telling the truth. It should only take up about one?third, or less, of the total time it takes to tell the whole story. In a lie, however, the prologue might be quite detailed. This is often where the liar's story contains a lot of truthful elements, such as time and place. The liar feels comfortable in this relative safety zone?after all, he's not lying yet. He will spend as much time as possible here.

The Main Section

The main event section that follows in a truthful story is normally the longest part, since it's the whole point of telling the story, and is where most of the action lies. In a false narrative, the main event section is often glossed over. An unusually short main event section should give a liespotter pause. It's the part of the story that answers the question, "What happened?" Under truthful circumstances, therefore, it should be the focus of someone's account.

The Epilogue

Last, an honest storyteller will usually provide an epilogue. While it's unlikely to be the most dramatic part of his account, the epilogue can be very emotional?possibly even more emotion-laden than the main story. Often, when we experience frightening or surprising events, we're so caught up in what's happening to us that we don't have time to pro cess how we feel about them. It's only later, once a perceived threat has passed, that we'll calm down enough to be able to acknowledge the emotions that have been triggered.

Therefore, those emotions are likely to crop up as we describe the aftereffects of the main event. Ninety percent of the time, a liar's story will not include an epilogue; he'll simply conclude with the main event. An epilogue would require him to fabricate the way the event affected him. But of course it didn't affect him at all, because it never really happened?or at least it didn't happen the way he says it did. Liars will do their best to avoid lying unnecessarily, so once they think they have said what needs to be said, they'll stop talking. True stories are often jumbled and filled with irrelevant as well as sensory details. Deceptive stories are often logical and streamlined, yet lacking in vivid sensory descriptions.

Petraeus, star on battlefield, felled at CIA by affair

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - David Petraeus was a star on the battlefield, commanding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, but was undone by "poor judgment" in engaging in an extramarital affair that led to his downfall as CIA director.

Just two days after his 60th birthday, Petraeus stepped down from the spy agency where he had held the top office since September 6, 2011.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation," Petraeus told the shadow warriors he commanded at CIA.

It was a stunning downfall for a revered military man who was seen as one of the top American leaders of his generation and was once considered a potential contender for the White House.

Petraeus was credited with pulling Iraq from the brink of all-out civil war and for battlefield successes in Afghanistan after overseeing a surge of 30,000 troops ordered by President Barack Obama in late 2009. He became known for counter-insurgency strategies that were seen as gaining ground against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"I don't think he was professionally overrated. His were genuine accomplishments," said James Carafano, a war historian with the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank.

At the time of his nomination to the CIA post, some Washington insiders had said the White House wanted to find a prominent position for Petraeus to ensure he would not be recruited by Republicans as a challenger to the 2012 Obama-Biden ticket.

When he was nominated to lead the CIA there were some concerns in intelligence circles that the high-profile four-star Army general might not be able to lead from the shadows as appropriate for a spy chief.

But once he took over the head office at the U.S. spy agency, Petraeus kept a decidedly low public profile.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, expressed regret about the resignation of "one of America's best and brightest" and said it was an "enormous loss" for the country.

"At CIA, Director Petraeus gave the agency leadership, stature, prestige and credibility both at home and abroad. On a personal level, I found his command of intelligence issues second to none," she said.

RESIGNATION ACCEPTED

After accepting his resignation about a year-and-a-half after nominating Petraeus to the CIA post, Obama said: "By any measure, he was one of the outstanding General officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new challenges, and leading our men and women in uniform through a remarkable period of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he helped our nation put those wars on a path to a responsible end."

Earlier this week, in a Newsweek article entitled "General David Petraeus's Rules for Living," he listed 12 lessons for leadership. Number 5 was: "We all will make mistakes. The key is to recognize them and admit them, to learn from them, and to take off the rear? view mirrors - drive on and avoid making them again."

In 2010 Petraeus stepped into the breach as the new commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan to replace General Stanley McChrystal who was fired by Obama in a scandal over an article in which McChrystal and his aides made mocking comments about the president and some of his top advisers.

In 2009 Petraeus was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and underwent radiation treatment. The media-friendly general joked at that time at a Washington event that reporters were only gathered "to see if the guy is still alive."

Petraeus, born in Cornwall, New York, lives in Virginia with his wife Holly. They have two grown children, a son who was an Army Ranger who served in Afghanistan, and a daughter.

Petraeus's wife, Holly, is an activist and volunteer who champions military families, and she continued that work after her husband retired from the military and moved to the CIA.

She currently is assistant director of the office of servicemember affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where she tries to keep unscrupulous lenders from taking advantage of military personnel. The bureau was championed by Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren, who was elected to the Senate from Massachusetts this week.

Holly Petraeus is the daughter of four-star General William Knowlton, who was superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point when Petraeus was a cadet.

She briefed the press at the Pentagon on her efforts recently and was introduced by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who called her "a true friend of the Department of Defense and a dedicated member of our military family."

Petraeus has four Defense Distinguished Service Medal awards, three Distinguished Service Medal awards, the Bronze Star Medal for valor, and the State Department Distinguished Service Award.

He has a doctorate in international relations from Princeton University.

Things You Must Know Before Hiring Any Limousine - A1 USA LIMO

Hiring a limo service is not as simple as you think and your limousine rental service, might just take you for quite a ride, if you are not very careful. Its therefore quite important that you select a decent and dependable limousine service and ensure a smooth and safe ride all the way.
Fairly often, you can judge how a limousine service treats their customers through a telephone inquiry. If your call is answered promptly and courteously by a company and if they give you all the important and relevant information without hesitating, you can be assured that they are a good bet.
While looking at web sites of limousine operators, its best to check if they have a fixed line number and a physical contact address. A mobile number or just a vague p.o. box number are signs of poor or fly by night operations.

It?s also important to see if the web site of the company whose services you?re considering hiring, displays images of their own vehicles. Many companies use pictures of brand new limousines but have cars that are battered and beaten. Its best to physically examine the fleet (limos).
There are times when you might come across agents who will tell you that they can secure quotations on your behalf. In such cases, the limousine operators pay for each inquiry they receive or a percentage of the hire value. It means that you will pay a higher price than you would otherwise These brokers often make claims that their limousine operators as ?accredited? or ?approved?. It?s best to stay away from such types.

Price is an important determining factor. Note that all limousine operators so not charge the same price. A professional limousine operator generally charges $45 an hour for a minimum of 4 hours for a car like a sedan while a stretch limousine may cost $60. A super stretch limousine may cost o a few dollars more. Even if you have to pay a slightly higher price in order to hire a service from a reputed and established limousine operator, it?s always worth it.

It?s also important to keep in mind the duration that you will need the limousine for. It generally takes about an hour to prepare a limousine for dispatch. Therefore, most operators ask for a minimum charge or a minimum hire duration of 3 hours or so. This is generally higher during peak periods like Christmas, New Year?s Eve etc. The minimum hire charge is most likely to be in the region of ?150.

Another important question is reliability. Stretch limousines are expensive to maintain and repair and poor companies often overlook any maintenance or repairs. Hiring from such companies can be quite disastrous. Your limousine may not show up on time or breakdown mid-way on your journey.
Its also important to know how long has the company whose service you plan to hire been in business. If they are well established, they are obviously more reliable than someone who has just started out a few months ago.

Try and find out how many cars the operator has in its fleet. Just in case the one you have hired breaks down, will they send you another one at once.
Is the operator you?re planning on selecting situated close to where you need to be picked up from? That will ensure that they reach you on time.
Its also important to know how old the car you will be driving in is. After all, you don?t want to show up in a beaten car at your fancy do. Its also sensible to view the car physically, a few days in advance if possible.

Also check what the rental price includes. Does it include Red Carpet, Complimentary soft-bar, bottle of champagne, just married sign, Drinks, Gratuities etc? Don?t ever hesitate to as if your chauffeur is licensed, trained and polite.

Does the company have the appropriate private hire insurance? It?s best to view it.
Its also quite sensible if you have written confirmation of the price?
Will you be given a booking confirmation with the itinerary and price included?
What are the payment methods they accept? What is the deposit you have to pay and when is the balance due? It?s important to know these in advance to avoid confusion later.
A professional limousine operator will be able to answer all your questions satisfactorily and ensure that you have a smooth and comfortable experience.

Dramatic Drop In Teen Pregnancy Really a Technology Tipping ...

By now many Americans have read the basics: 9000 St. Louis women are offered their choice of contraceptives for free. Two years later, the teen pregnancy rate is at 6 per 1000 instead of the country average of 34. The abortion rate is 4.4 to 7.5 per 1000, less than half the rate of other St. Louis women. The researchers?whooping like miners who have just struck the public health mother lode?go national with their story.

But the real story is even bigger. What got triggered when 9000 women were offered free birth control was a technology shift in a microcosm. When presented with comprehensive information and a buffet of no-cost options, a majority of the study?s participants, almost 75%, shifted from 1960?s contraceptive technologies to state-of-the-art long acting reversible contraceptives known in the industry as LARCs. And they liked them!

It was a perfect example of how private philanthropy combined with government action can seed a market for new technologies that benefit the public at large. The benefits accrue both to taxpayers, who see their joint investment produce dividends in public wellbeing, and to risk-taking innovative businesses that serve the public interest.

The most widely used contraceptive in the U.S. is the Pill, released almost half a century ago and refined in intervening years to reduce the hormone load and side effects. The Pill has been a game changer, but it is far from perfect, especially from a human factors standpoint. Very few human beings are able to take a daily medication with perfect consistency, and that fact alone largely accounts for an annual pregnancy rate of 1 in 12 for women on the Pill. (For couples using condoms, the rate is 1 in 8. With no contraception it is over 8 in 10.)

The limitations of the Pill were recognized almost immediately, but early stage contraceptive research is a risky, low-return endeavor, not very interesting to most pharmaceutical companies that have stockholders to please. The gap was filled by, among others, the Population Council, a global not-for-profit that channels money into research around reproductive health technologies and programs. (Their latest contraceptive technology, now in clinical trials, is a ring that lasts a year and also protects against HIV.) In the 1970?s, the Pop Council pioneered two IUD?s, one copper and one hormonal, which they then licensed to pharmaceutical companies. These two went on to become the Paragard and Mirena, the only two IUD?s currently available on the U.S. market. In the 1980?s they developed the first widely adopted implant, now sold internationally (but not in the U.S.) as Jadelle.

In the real world, long acting reversible contraceptives have 1/10 to 1/50th the failure rate of Pills, and they are cheaper in the long run. But the upfront cost is substantial, as much as $1000 for the device and insertion. The result is that women who are living month to month often choose old technologies and then pay the price, and even middle class women with health insurance may balk at the lump sum. Taking the money out of the equation changes the bottom line.

America?s high rates of teen pregnancy and unintended pregnancy (and consequent abortion) have been attributed to a number of factors: Puritan sexual sensibilities that interfere with candid conversations about sexuality; a ?virginity myth? that inclines teens to prefer impulsive, unsafe sex over ?premeditated? sex; a wobbly ladder of opportunity combined with welfare incentives that make it more enticing for some young women to get pregnant than to pursue financial independence. All of these may be real, but it is striking that a simple shift in access to better technologies trumps them all, producing a teen pregnancy rate on par with that in Europe?s most thriving social democracies.

Why?

  1. Traditional contraceptives have a big gap between ?perfect use? and ?real world.? Short acting hormonal methods like pills and patches, and barrier methods like diaphragms and condoms all have major gaps between how well they work under ?perfect use? or laboratory conditions, and how well they work in the real world. For timing methods like Natural Family Planning, withdrawal, and abstinence the gap can be enormous, because they require a level of knowledge, self-awareness, control and communication that is beyond most people. By contrast, with a LARC, what you see is what you get. Once a LARC is in place, it works in the real world just like it works in the research.
  2. LARCS are better at blocking pregnancy.? If you keep in mind that 85 women out of 100 will get pregnant in a year of unprotected sex, the contraceptive effect of the Pill is dramatic. In a perfect world where pill-taking never got disrupted by bounced checks, marital disputes or forgetfulness only two women out of every hundred would get pregnant on the Pill. Not bad, unless you?re one of the two. Even so a well settled LARC leads to far fewer. It?s anywhere from 2/800 (copper IUD) to somewhere around 2/4000 (implant).
  3. Fewer side effects means higher continuation.? In the St. Louis study, 85 percent of the women who chose a LARC were still using it a year later, compared with about half of those who had chosen a short acting method like the Pill or ring or patch. Part of the difference may be the hassle factor, but also short acting methods like the Pill or ring or patch require a larger dose of hormone than an IUD. No contraceptive works the same for everyone, but on average a lower dose means fewer side effects. And fewer side effects means women are less likely to go through risky gaps when they are changing methods.
  4. LARCs toggle the fertility default. Imagine if the light switches in your house all turned themselves back on after a certain amount of time whether you wanted them on or not. That?s how fertility works. It turns on at adolescence and stays on for the next forty years whether a woman wants it on or not. During that time she may want to have one child or four or none. The rest of those forty years, some 400 reproductive cycles, she has to either switch it back off or avoid having a fertile egg come in contact with sperm. The Pill requires her to flip the switch off every day. A LARC means she can hit it as infrequently as once every twelve years ?and still flip it back on when she wants to have a child. In recent years, behavioral scientists have learned quite a bit about default effects?how much human behavior is driven, not by choice but by indecision or inattention or inconvenience or inertia or impulse. LARCs take these factors out of the equation for long periods of time, making pregnancy an active and more often mutual decision.

It all adds up to a technology leap that is huge, especially for people who are already up against the hard edges of life: teenage girls who haven?t quite figured out what they want for themselves, or how to say no; families that are struggling to make ends meet; fundamentalist women for whom either another baby or an abortion would feel like a nightmare; tired moms who just want to relax about sex, confident that intimacy won?t mean another 6000 diapers.

As an American, two of my cherished values are freedom and opportunity. As a woman, the ability to manage my fertility is fundamental to both, and I want that same ability for my two daughters and the other young women in my life. That?s why the St. Louis ?Obamacare Simulation? is such an exciting example of how philanthropy, government, and private enterprise can team up to trigger the technology tipping points that create my dream future. ?Philanthropists had seeded socially beneficial technologies. Corporations were eager to distribute them and reap a profit. And yet, without a publically funded program that lowered barriers, most women would have gone on using old technology at best. (Only five percent of contracepting women in the U.S. use some kind of LARC. Contrast that to over 25 percent in Norway.) Enter the third member of the team, government, and the equation changes. Radically.

Sometimes when I think about the Pill, I think about my old Apple IIc. It changed the way I operated, but I?m really, really glad people kept innovating. ?I?m glad that dreamers drove forward ideas that otherwise would have languished. I?m glad that government invested some of our pooled resources in building and regulating the internet. I?m glad that philanthropy and government made information technology available in public universities, schools, and community centers. I?m glad that the power of the market brought information to my fingertips. ?Technology change takes a village.
