73-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Shoots 2 Holes-In-One In Same Round

Erroll Cook

Erroll Cook recently shot two holes-in-one in nine holes on a N.J. golf course. (Photo: CBS 2)

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? Erroll Cook said he knew the first shot off the tee at Mountain Ridge Country Club was a good one the moment he hit it. The second, though, two holes later, was the real surprise.

The 73-year-old cancer survivor is one the few people on the planet ever to have sunk two holes-in-one in the same round of golf, let alone the same nine holes.

It happened last weekend when Cook was playing with friends on the manicured Donald Ross Course in West Caldwell. The first shot was on the 14th hole, a straight 150-yard Par 3 that looked good leaving the tee but rolled out of sight after landing on the green. Cook, his partners, and the caddy all searched the area without luck until they found his ball where they least expected: in the cup. He?d aced it.

That?s happened before. Twenty minutes later, though, Cook joked at the tee of another Par 3, when he was asked what the odds were of doing it again (his partners didn?t know off-hand but subsequent research indicates the odds are roughly 1-in-67 Million ). They laughed, he swung and they watched it happen again.

?It want over the water,? he told CBS 2?s Lou Young, ?and there?s a (sand) trap. It went over the trap, then five yards to the right and all of us just went hysterical when it went in!?

Fellow golfer Dr. Joel Matkin said they were all amazed.

?I think our eyes popped out of our heads. It was dramatic,? Matkin said.

Cook said he doesn?t remember his reaction but added, ?They told me I fell down laughing. It didn?t sink in for a little while.? He paused and then broke into a broad smile, ?It still hasn?t sunk in.?

Matkin said he immediately checked on Cook to make sure he was okay. The retired financial executive has had health problems over the years, including a serious bout with cancer that he beat with a bone marrow transplant 19 years ago. Cook assured his friends he was fine. Back at the clubhouse some were skeptical at first, but then transitioned to amazement as the witnesses all confirmed his claim.

?He is a good golfer,? buddy Marty Sarver said, ?but not THAT good.?

When asked how Cook would explain it then, Sarver said, ?You can?t. It?s just wonderful.?

Fellow golfer Norm Feinstein said he?s had three holes-in-one in decades of playing golf, but had never heard of it happening twice to the same golfer in the same round.

?You can?t put odds on it,? Feinstein said, ?because I?m not sure it?s ever happened before.?

It turns out that in the history of the sport roughly 150 people have managed the two-in-one trick. Very few, though, managed to accomplish the feat in the same nine holes. It?s only happened twice on the PGA Tour. Daniel Chopra managed it on the 7th and 17th holes at Pebble Beach earlier this year during a practice round.

Crisis? Germans savor sunshine as euro storm blows

HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - For his fellow Germans, explains businessman Roland Frobel, the euro crisis is a hurricane that may have been spotted on the horizon but has yet to blow in.

"The storm is coming, everybody knows that, but the lightning has not struck yet," said the chief financial officer of Rossmann, one of Germany's largest health and beauty retail chains, at its headquarters near the northern city of Hanover.

From where he is standing, it is hard to imagine sunnier economic weather. His firm has recently created nearly 3,000 new jobs in Germany and abroad - where it has been expanding in non-euro zone countries such as Poland and Turkey - and expects its sales this year to rise by nearly 12 percent from 2011.

"The feeling of looming crisis that people have is still vague, undefined," said Frobel. "And you see this in their continued willingness to go out and buy. Their readiness to consume is holding up well."

Hanover, a bustling industrial and trading hub on the fertile plain of northern Germany, is a world away from the recession engulfing Greece, Spain and other parts of Europe.

Life, for Germans, is as it should be. Unemployment is at 20-year lows. Exports are at record levels. The national soccer squad has predictably been storming from one victory to the next in the Euro 2012 championship.

German consumer morale actually rose going into July, a key survey by GfK market research group showed this week, on hopes of higher wages, though it also revealed greater pessimism about the economic outlook due to the euro crisis.

People are well aware that everything could suddenly change for the worse if the crisis affecting their neighbors finally blows in.

"In Germany there is no crisis. But that could change very fast. The euro is unloved and we miss the deutschmark," pensioner Paul Majer, 76, said as he strolled with his wife around the cobbled streets of Hanover's old town.

CULTURE CLASH

Like many Germans, he blames those in southern countries for putting Germany's hard-won prosperity at risk by failing to enact the sort of austerity measures Germany endured when the euro arrived and wages were held down to keep it competitive.

"I don't believe things will stay OK for much longer. The euro zone is too diverse. They say we Germans live to work while the Mediterranean cultures work to live," Majer said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will be under unprecedented pressure at a European Union summit this week to pledge more of German taxpayers' cash to rescue the euro. Her countrymen, including the burghers of Hanover, are having none of it.

"Greece should not get any more money, it is a bottomless pit. The strong countries cannot prop up the weak ones forever. Germany is just not strong enough to do that," said taxi driver Kurt Ringling, 65.

A city of 500,000 people, Hanover is a good place to take the pulse of 'middle Germany' because of its central location and a diverse economy that includes major manufacturers such as Continental and Volkswagen, insurance firms and tour operator TUI. It is also home to the world's biggest trade fair.

"Unemployment here fell again last month. The unions have secured wage increases. Many firms are doing relatively well, both the big industrial firms that rely on exports but also the 'Mittelstand'," said mayor Stephan Weil, referring to Germany's often family-owned small and medium-sized businesses.

"But many people look with anxiety at Europe, especially those countries in big financial difficulty like Greece and Spain. Many people in Hanover know the countries from having spent holidays there or have friends and acquaintances here who have come here from those countries," he said.

PATIENCE WEARING THIN

The storm clouds of the crisis are slowly arriving. Local newspapers have reported the introduction of short-time working at factories belonging to leading automotive suppliers Continental and Johnson Controls in the Hanover area because of crumbling demand in key European markets.

Psychologist Manon Rossmanik, 35, said she did not feel the euro crisis in her own life but said there were growing signs of people preparing for the worst.

"Real estate prices are going up. People want to protect their savings by buying property, tangible things," she said, clutching a wad of estate agency brochures.

That sense of alarm prods Germans to stand by Merkel and her firm insistence that other euro zone countries accept their austerity "medicine" before receiving aid.

"Germans' patience is wearing thin - in fact, there's none left. We sometimes have the impression Europe can only exist by being on the German payroll," said Wolfgang Nowak, head of the Alfred Herrhausen Society, a think-tank run by Deutsche Bank.

"The German national mood is very anti-bailout... We want Merkel to be a good Swabian housewife," he said, invoking a popular German image of penny-pinching prudence.

At the site of the annual Hanover trade fair, which has its roots in the postwar reconstruction that gave rise to Germany's 'Wirtschaftswunder' (economic miracle), the mood remains upbeat.

Some 5,000 firms, about half of them German, exhibited at this year's fair in April. Many of them Chinese, a sign of Germany's success in exporting beyond the euro zone to high-growth Asian markets. Premier Wen Jiabao visited with Merkel.

The euro zone stayed largely in the background, said Wolfram von Fritsch, chairman of the board of Deutsche Messe which runs the trade fairs.

German exporters had proven their resilience by bouncing back strongly from the 2008-09 global financial crisis, he said. He, too, reached for a weather metaphor to describe how German businesses were locating markets in temperate climes.

"The euro crisis is seen as a kind of natural disaster. Like rain or snow, it is something we can't change, so let's just focus on our main business."

An Explanation Of Some Of The More Typical Watch Movements

It is inevitably confusing when faced with the ordeal of having to choose a new watch if you do not know the difference between the types of movement and which is best.

This article aims to give a brief overview of the variety of different watch movements available and you will be likely to encounter.

Quartz Movement

A quartz watch is a watch that uses an electronic pendulum that is regulated by a quartz crystal to keep time. This crystal oscillator creates a signal with very precise frequency, so that quartz timepieces are at least an order of magnitude more accurate than good mechanical clocks. Generally, some form of digital logic counts the cycles of this signal and provides a numeric time display, usually in units of hours, minutes, and seconds. Quartz timekeepers are the world?s most widely used timekeeping technology, used in most clocks and watches, as well as computers and other appliances that keep time.

Automatic Movement

An automatic or self-winding watch is a mechanical watch, whose mainspring is wound automatically by the natural motion of the wearer?s arm, providing energy to keep the watch active, making it unnecessary to manually wind the watch.

These are powered by an internal spiral spring called a mainspring which turns the gears that move the hands. The spring loses energy as the watch runs, so in a manual watch movement the spring must be daily wound by the owner turning a small knob on the case to provide energy to run the watch, otherwise the watch runs down and stops.

A self-winding watch movement is similar to a manual movement with the addition of a mechanism powered by an eccentric weight which winds the mainspring. The watch contains a semicircular rotor, an eccentric weight that turns on a pivot, within the watch case. The normal movements of the user?s arm and wrist cause the rotor to pivot back-and-forth on its staff, which is attached to a ratcheted winding mechanism. The motion of the wearer?s arm is thereby translated into the circular motion of the rotor that, through a series of reverser and reducing gears, eventually winds the mainspring. Modern self-winding mechanisms have two ratchets and wind the mainspring during both clockwise and counterclockwise rotor motions.

Chronometers

Chronometers use a form of Quartz movement and are designed as time standards. They often include a mechanism to keep the crystal at a constant temperature to avoid any variance in density or otherwise interrupt the precise running of the timepiece. Some self-rate and include crystal farms, so that the clock can take the average of a set of time measurements to ensure that they are running on time.

Eco-drive/Solar Powered

The Eco-Drive concept introduced several major technical refinements over previous solar powered watches. The combination of these refinements for the first time gave watch designers the opportunity to design light powered watches without the need to incorporate conspicuous solar cells on the watch dial.

Most Eco-Drive type watches are equipped with a special titanium lithium ion secondary battery that is charged by an amorphous silicon solar cell located behind the dial. Light passes through the covering crystal and dial before it reaches the solar cell. Should insufficient light hit the solar cell after time the watch will go into hibernation and a quartz movement (see above) will keep track of time. During this time the hands will stop but will return to normal once light hits the cell again.

Conclusion

The choice of watch movement is entirely yours. The type of movement can affect the price of the timepiece, for example, Chronometers are usually quite expensive. This will obviously be a factor in making your decision. This overview, it is hoped, will give you at least a relatively informed opinion helping you to make the best choice for you.

Stockton, California becomes largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy

(Reuters) - Stockton, California became the largest city to file for bankruptcy in U.S. history on Thursday, after decades of fiscal mismanagement and a housing-market crash left it unable to pay its workers, pensioners and bondholders.

The filing followed three months of confidential talks between Stockton and its creditors aimed at averting bankruptcy.

The negotiations ended on Monday with the city failing to win enough concessions to help close its shortfall for the fiscal year starting on July 1.

The city of nearly 300,000 in California's Central Valley becomes the nation's most populous to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Jefferson County, Alabama, still remains the biggest in terms of debt outstanding, as it had a debt load exceeding $4 billion when it filed in 2011. Stockton has about $700 million in bond debt.

Stockton has suffered a sharp drop in revenue since the collapse of its once red-hot housing market. The housing boom transformed the farming city into a distant bedroom community of the San Francisco Bay area, and the bust put it at or near the top of national foreclosure rankings in recent years.

Comcast, FCC Agree To Consent Degree on Broadband Service ...

In an unprecedented move, the Federal Communications Commission found that Comcast didn't do enough to live up to one of the merger conditions it imposed when it approved the cable giant's merger with NBC Universal. Namely, it didn't do enough advertising, according to the FCC, and that's costing Comcast $800,000.

At issue was Comcast's commitment to offer standalone broadband Internet services at a reasonable price with sufficient bandwidth to customers that don't subscribe to Comcast's cable services.

Following its investigation, the FCC concluded that Comcast was not adequately marketing the service known as Performance Starter, which Comcast launched in February 2011, one month after the FCC's merger order.??

As part of a consent decree, Comcast agreed to cut an $800,000 check to the U.S. Treasury. Comcast will must also offer the Performance Starter $49.95/month service for an additional year beyond the FCC's original merger order, to at least Feb. 21, 2015.

The action by the FCC is the first consent decree in the agency's history extending a merger condition.

"Today's action demonstrates that compliance with Commission orders is not optional," said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowsi. "The remedies announced today will benefit consumers and foster competition, including from online video and satellite providers, by ensuring that standalone broadband is truly available in Comcast's service areas."

In a statement, Comcast spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice said the company was pleased it was able to address the issues cooperatively and constructively. "As is often the case with services associated with government orders, the FCC had questions on how the service might have been rolled out in a different or even better way," she said. "We look forward to continuing to offer and market Performance Starter in additional ways and with additional outlets. We believe this product offers a choice consumers want in the marketplace."

The consent decree with Comcast is the second time the FCC took the cable to task for not living up to its merger conditions. Earlier this year, the FCC ordered Comcast to move Bloomberg TV next to other news channels on its cable lineups.

How to Handle an Imbalance of Power in Your Relationship ? In Our ...

by: Clarisse Thorn

Note: This post was originally featured on Role/Reboot and was republished with permission. You can find the original here.

Have you ever been involved with someone you were totally into, who seemed much less interested than you did? Or have you ever been with someone who was way more into you than you were into them? These situations happen to almost everyone eventually, and as a culture, we?ve devised a few ways to discuss them. For example, we have lingo like ?friend zone? to indicate a person who?s pining after a friend. What?s hard is finding good advice on how to deal with those relationships?from either position.

Values like ?equality? and ?egalitarianism? are deeply embedded in U.S. culture. This, among other factors, makes it difficult to talk about power differentials in relationships. A lot of the time, the instinct seems to be to ignore a given power differential, because it?s uncomfortable to think about it. And I guess that for some couples, that works. At least, it works inasmuch as they can make the relationship function without talking about it?sometimes only barely, but it functions. In my experience, though, it?s best to have some mutual awareness and communication of what?s going on within a power differential, because in that case, it?s easier to be gentle and responsible with our partners.

Lots of relationship formations are relevant to a discussion about power differentials: S&M play is the most obvious example, but there are also examples like cross-generational relationships, relationships where one partner has way more money than the other, etc. The important questions become: How does the partner in the more powerful position avoid abusing the other partner? How often is power a one-way street, anyway? Again, since S&M plays with power so blatantly, these questions are most often out in the open with S&Mers. For example, S&Mers are fond of saying that ?the submissive has all the real power,? what with safewords and all. But if a rich older man falls for and marries a beautiful but poor young woman, then is it always obvious that he has far more power? Does she, sometimes, merely wield a different kind of power?

Outsiders are often quick to condemn such relationships. But these arrangements have always struck me as incredibly contextual; they?re dependent on how much genuine respect the partners have for each other, and the depth of their communication?as with any relationship.

I see ?mixed-investment? relationships, where one partner is way more into the other, as part of this tapestry. For one thing, there?s the one-way street question: Does the person who?s less invested always have more power? Sometimes, the partner who?s less invested will spend so much time feeling anxious about hurting the other partner that they strongly limit their own actions.

In all relationships containing a strong power differential, there?s a question of when (if ever) the ?powerful? partner has a responsibility to end things with the ?less powerful? partner. In the case of mixed-investment relationships, I think there often comes a point where the more ?powerful? partner can too easily abuse the other partner?s affections, and thus has a responsibility to end it. Detecting that point can be difficult, though.

Often, this is complicated by the fact that a more-invested partner can tell that the other partner is less invested?and will become anxious about ?scaring them off.? Being in love with someone means wanting to spend time with them, and wanting to spare them pain. Say I?m totally in love with some guy who is Not That Into Me. If it?s obvious to me that showing a guy how much I like him could make him feel uncomfortable and cause him to limit his time with me, then my natural instinct will be to hide my investment.

It?s easy to say that I ?should? be open about my feelings with him?but most of us have faced this choice before, and know how hard it is.

Another complication is that sometimes, the relationship mismatch will change or flip over time. I chased my first boyfriend for years before he committed to me, but a few years after that, I was the one who dumped him and he was the one who was devastated.

I?ve known people who felt that every time a relationship is uneven, it?s the more invested partner?s responsibility to end it. But again, if we place these relationships within a wider context, it becomes clear that they?re just another kind of relationship with a power differential. Like the others, it?s a question of communication and respect. If both partners respect and value each other, then a mixed-investment relationship doesn?t have to be a problem. The problems come in when partners aren?t transparent about their expectations, and don?t stay aware of what they need.

So perhaps the best advice to give people in a mixed-investment relationship would be thoughts like:

  • Know what you want, and what you are willing to give.
  • If you want the relationship to develop further, and your partner makes it clear that it won?t, then perhaps it?s time to evaluate walking away.
  • If you don?t want the relationship to develop further, and your partner does, then making that clear is very important.
  • Relationships like these can often feel like a ?waste of time? to the more-invested partner. Are they? It?s a question each person should ask themselves.
  • Relationships like these can also be stressful on the less-invested partner. Are you worrying a lot about whether your partner?s feelings are too strong? That?s another question people can ask themselves.

More thoughts are always welcome. How would you advise a person in a mixed-investment relationship?

Kemp all but ruled out of All-Star game

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:13 p.m. ET June 25, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have all but ruled out injured slugger Matt Kemp for next month's All-Star game in Kansas City.

"It's a long shot at this point because he's not healthy," general manager Ned Colletti said Monday before the opener of a three-game series at San Francisco.

The slugging center fielder is still recovering from a strained left hamstring that landed him on the disabled list for a second time this season May 31. The 2011 NL MVP runner-up first missed time from May 14-29.

Manager Don Mattingly is supportive if Kemp wants to participate in the Home Run Derby, as Los Angeles' medical staff has given him the go-ahead to do so.

Kemp said last week in Oakland he had discussed the Midsummer Classic with Mattingly and wants to make sure he is fully healthy for the second half with NL West-leading Los Angeles.

"You wouldn't expect anything else out of anybody else," Colletti said of Kemp's team-first focus. "We're talking about All-Star games and things like that, it's tough for us to look into the future when we don't even have a rehab game scheduled."

Mattingly hopes Kemp might begin a rehab assignment before the break, but the thinking is the Dodgers will want Kemp to return to playing big league games before clearing him to play in the All-Star game - and there isn't much time left for him to do both.

"I think he feels the same way," Mattingly said. "He's not ready to play yet."

Ideally, Kemp would play in five or six minor league games first. He leads the National League in votes, with his total at 3,322,009 in baseball's latest count. New NL numbers will be released Tuesday.

"As an organization we're kind of the bad guy in this," Mattingly said. "That's the way it has to be."

Kemp, who predicted in spring training he might just become the first player to ever hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases, is batting .355 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs in 36 games and has two stolen bases.

Mattingly left open the slim possibility of Kemp appearing in the All-Star game July 10 at Kauffman Stadium if he has already returned to the Dodgers' lineup first.

"We talked about him playing for us before we get there, so if he's been able to do all that and play for us before the All-Star game ... we're talking about all this guessing when he's going to be ready," Mattingly said. "It seems silly to me, honestly. He's not ready to play yet, he's still going through the process of running bases and running curves. We're talking about an All-Star game, we're talking about practice."

Second baseman Mark Ellis, recovering from left leg surgery, also is close to going on a rehab assignment and is considered to be slightly ahead of Kemp, schedule-wise. He also is expected back in the lineup after the All-Star break.

Program Helps Young Cancer Survivor's Classmates Understand ...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? When a child has a major illness, the focus is on making sure they recover. But once they?re well, the transition back to everyday life can be a challenge. Classmates don?t always know how to react when a child returns to school, but the school re-entry program works to make that process easier.

It wasn?t long ago when cancer kept Julia Kauth from fully enjoying her life. Now an active 7-year-old, Julia has recovered from a rare form of kidney cancer.

?All of it, overall, was extremely difficult,? said Torey Kauth, Julia?s father.

One unexpected challenge of the healing process came when Julia became the center of unwanted attention when she returned to school.

?They would say I kind of looked like a boy,? Julia said.

To help her fellow students understand her illness, Julia relied on the Children?s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota?s school re-entry program. Vicky Neis, a child life specialist, went to Julia?s class to answer questions about her cancer.

Neis said she explained to the schoolchildren that cancer is not contagious and that kids with cancer did nothing wrong to get it.

?They told everyone what I was going to be doing, and it happens to other kids,? Julia said.

Now in its twentieth year, the program has grown much. Last year, it helped 104 kids.

?I think it?s demystifying, in a way that?s positive, is really helpful,? Neis said.

When Julia heads back to class in the fall, she knows she won?t be a distraction.

?They don?t ask questions about me anymore, and they don?t stare at me,? Julia said.

Part of the education the program gives focuses on the child?s friends. It encourages them to take on the burden of answering questions if their friend doesn?t feel up to it.

The Children?s School Re-Entry Program is funded by Great Clips. From now until Friday, Great Clips stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin will donate a portion of the proceeds from every haircut. To learn more about the program, go to the Children?s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota website.

Taxing Spending: The Case For a National Consumption Tax ? Know

If Rodney Dangerfield were a tax form, he?d be a 1040: As the federal income tax nears its 100th birthday, next year, it?s getting no respect. Presidential candidates have one-upped one another with plans to replace it ? from?Herman Cain?s 9-9-9?to Rick Perry?s?file-on-a-postcard.

Although most of these tax plans have sunk as quickly as they?ve arisen, an income tax alone might not be the most effective way to finance the federal government, say several tax and finance experts at the University of Texas at Austin. None want to replace it entirely, but they suggest that the U.S. consider a parallel tax system: a national consumption tax.

Penalizing Consumption Over Income

Consumption taxes share one principle: Instead of taxing what Americans earn, tax what they spend. The most familiar variety is a sales tax, which sellers collect from consumers and pass on to government. But there are many variations, such as excise taxes, which single out specific goods like gasoline or cigarettes.

Why levy a tax on spending? The underlying idea is that government should not penalize work more than other behaviors. ?The theory is that if income tax rates are high enough, they discourage work and savings,? says?Robert Peroni, professor at the School of Law. ?A sales tax is discouraging consumption behavior, and better to discourage consumption than savings or work.?

A more pressing and practical consideration is the national debt. It?s currently $15.7 trillion. Even with budget cuts approved last year by Congress, it will swell by another $3.5 trillion over 10 years, projects the Congressional Budget Office.

?If you look ahead 10 years from now,? says Peroni. ?We?ll probably have some mixture of income tax with some kind of federal consumption tax, to avoid becoming Greece.?

He notes that the U.S. is one of the few industrialized nations that doesn?t already have a national consumption tax. Among the 27 countries in the European Union, 33 percent of revenue comes from consumption taxes, compared to 31 percent from income taxes. In the United Kingdom, a 20 percent consumption tax helps hold the income tax down to a top bracket of 50 percent.

Understanding the VAT
EU nations use a type of consumption tax called a value-added tax (VAT), and a few American public figures, like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, have suggested importing the model.

A VAT works much like a sales tax. But instead of being collected once ? when a consumer buys a finished product ? it?s collected in bits and pieces at every step along the business supply chain. Essentially, each company pays tax on the difference between the materials it buys and the product it sells ? the value it adds to the product.

The virtue of a VAT, from a tax collector?s perspective, is that it?s harder to evade than an income tax or a traditional sales tax. That?s because businesses have a stake in keeping one another honest.

Say a retail store buys a computer from a manufacturer for $600 and sells it for $1,000. If the VAT rate is 10 percent, the retailer owes the government $100 (10 percent of the sale price). But the retailer gets a credit invoice, documenting the $60 in tax the manufacturer has already paid. The retailer is only on the hook for $40.

?It creates a self-enforcement mechanism,? says?Lillian Mills, chair of the?Department of Accounting?at the McCombs School of Business. ?If I?m a retailer, I want the credit from the supplier, so I buy from someone who?s remitting the tax.?

For people other than tax collectors, a VAT might have some downsides, warns Peroni. For one thing, it would compete with existing sales taxes. ?We have state sales taxes, which most foreign countries don?t,? he says. ?State and local governments fear there would be pressure to lower or get rid of their sales taxes.?

More obvious, he says, would be the shock to consumer prices. ?People would see it right away. Suddenly everything in a restaurant would cost 10 percent more.?

To fully replace the federal income tax, he adds, might require a VAT as high as 35 percent. A more palatable course might be to trade off a modest VAT for lower income tax rates and eliminate many high-dollar deductions.

If you believe that taxes should be tilted toward those who can most afford to pay them, Peroni suggests using a VAT to replace Social Security and Medicare taxes. Such payroll taxes take their biggest bites out of low-income workers, who pay higher percentages of their incomes, whereas a VAT would spread the pain over all income levels.

Creeping Up
Not every finance expert is bullish on a national consumption tax. It might sound appealing to accept a small VAT in exchange for lower income tax rates, says?Jim Nolen, a distinguished senior lecturer in finance who recently retired from McCombs. But small taxes tend not to stay small. ?Once you give them the ability to tax something,? he says, ?next year it goes up 1 percent, then the next year another.?

That?s been the experience in Europe. Germany, which started with a VAT of 10 percent, now charges 19 percent. In the United Kingdom, it?s risen from 8 percent to 20 percent.

The other danger, says Nolen, is that citizens pay less attention to taxes when they pay them a little bit at a time. ?When it?s one tax, people complain a lot, but when you take it from multiple sources people don?t notice it as much. I?m afraid we?re going to leave the income tax in place and put a value-added tax on top of it.?

Mills acknowledges the danger that a new tax could fuel higher government spending. ?The political concern, if we create a value-added tax, is that it?s very difficult to maintain fiscal discipline when you have a new source of revenues.?

Nonetheless, she says, Uncle Sam might have no better choice. ?I look at Social Security and Medicare. Those two programs put a lot of pressure on our tax system. Without bigger increases in the retirement age, we will need new sources of tax revenue. It?s likely that at some point we will have a value-added tax or an excise tax.?

"We should have it by the end of the week," said Luis Martinez, a spokesman for U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The seizure will be a "major step forward" for the government of?Mongolia, which is claiming sovereign ownership and seeking the skeleton's return, said?Robert Painter, a?Houston?attorney who represents Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia.

The skeleton - 8 feet (2.4m) tall and 24 feet (7.3m) long - has been stored in crates in New York City since Heritage sold it at auction to an unidentified buyer for more than $1 million on May 20.

Morsi's Win: Progress or Paralysis?

And so it begins: an unprecedented test on the world stage of whether Islamist politics can, at long last, join modernity. Can an Islamist head of state renounce jihadist violence in practice (as al-Qaida or its many offshoots, and Hamas and Hezbollah, have been unable to do)? Can he can work with the international community rather than consistently defy it (like the Iranian regime)?

True, the immediate prospect for a positive solution to these questions doesn't look especially promising. Sunday?s announcement that the Muslim Brotherhood?s candidate, Mohamed Morsi, won Egypt?s presidential runoff marked the first election of an Islamist head of state in Arab history. But Egypt?s quasi-junta, the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces, has already stripped Morsi?s presidency of most of its powers, with vague promises of restoring them under a new constitution.

And yet, with Morsi garnering an announced 51.7 percent of the runoff vote, there are risks posed by any new Egyptian constitution because the new president has pledged that it will be founded on the Quran, and he intends that it will impose a strict version of Islamic law, or sharia. Morsi also told The Washington Post in an interview last year that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with its salafist or ultra-conservative version of sharia, was a good model for Egypt. But since Egypt is not a monarchy any longer, it was unclear how a new Egyptian government based on the Saudi model could be imposed other than by a Brotherhood or pan-Islamist takeover, along the lines of the Iranian model.

(RELATED, FOR MEMBERS: Rise of the Islamists)

At the same time, Morsi has expressed a willingness to work with other political parties in governing Egypt; the Muslim Brotherhood has officially renounced violence; and it has spoken of integrating Egypt?s economy with the rest of the world, all hopeful signs. And Morsi , 60, did study in the United States, earning a doctorate in engineering from the University of Southern California. But on a personal level, his U.S. stay only seemed to disgust him morally and radicalize him, as it apparently helped to do to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the 9/11 mastermind who had studied in North Carolina in the 1980s. Morsi has also spoken harshly about Israel, though he has indicated he has no plans to abrogate the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.

The most likely outcome in Egypt now is long-term stalemate and a slow muddle-through approach?and, oddly enough, the Obama administration probably favors this.?That?s because the checks and balances in Egyptian democracy, such as they are, now exist mainly between the military and the Islamists, with the hopeful secular Democrats largely marginalized for the moment (and actually favoring, over the Brotherhood, the generals they once crowded the streets to oust). No one in the West especially wants either side, military or Muslim, to dominate.

Fawaz Gerges, a Middle East expert at the London School of Economics, told National Journal on Sunday that the Brotherhood and SCAF have already reached a modus vivendi for the moment. ?Morsi would not have been declared a winner without a deal with SCAF,? Gerges said. ?The Brotherhood will play politics and will not take on the military. They have been burned before, a fact deeply etched in the imagination, so the Brothers will go to great lengths to wheel and deal to avoid a confrontation.?

Gerges also says that those who fear the Islamist parties will ?hijack and Islamize the? political systems of the region? are alarmist. In the last three decades, he says, the majority of religious activists have evolved, matured and distanced themselves from maximalist goals, including ideal Islamic states. ?As realists, Islamists also know that checks and balances exist and that the military would strike with an iron fist if they act recklessly,? Gerges writes in a new as-yet-unpublished paper. He adds: ?The big battles over the future of Egypt are yet to be fought. There is a lot of dust and let?s not be blinded by it.?

Not surprisingly, the Obama administration has been consistently cautious on the election results, gingerly seeking to cultivate the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists, but at the same time not coming down too hard on the Egyptian generals.?The problem: Washington finds itself unable to endorse either the interim constitution imposed by SCAF, which stripped the presidency of its powers and dissolved the legislature, or any prospective sharia-based one sought by Morsi.

In comments last week, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the Obama administration would review the U.S. relationship with Egypt if SCAF failed to restore full powers to the presidency and permit a new parliamentary election.?But these official protests have remained strikingly muted: Only days after the Pentagon announced that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on June 15?"highlighted the need to move forward expeditiously with Egypt's political transition" in a conversation with Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the SCAF announced its?legal coup. Mostly silence from the administration followed, punctuated by a few mild protests from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

What is becoming settled wisdom in U.S. policy-making circles, except among those on the extreme right or aligned with the pro-Israel lobby, is that the U.S. has no choice but to engage with the Brotherhood and other Islamist groups that, during the long era of Arab autocracy, proved to be the only alternative means of political expression. Even some of the smarter hardliners, like Reuel Marc Gerecht,?are coming to realize that the Arab world may find another route to democracy?through Islamism.??

America may simply have to endure an unpleasant Islamist middle stage?and Arabs may have to experience its failure, as the Iranians have?before modernity finally overtakes Iraq and the Arab world. As Columbia University scholar Richard Bulliet has written: "Finding ways of wedding [Islam's traditional] protective role with modern democratic and economic institutions is a challenge that has not yet been met." The best hope, some of these scholars say, is that after a generation or so, the "Islamic" tag in Arab religious parties becomes rather harmless, reminiscent of what happened to Christian democratic parties in Europe.

With Morsi?s election, we finally have a real-world test of this proposition.

(AP) ? Even if Spain failed to live up to expectations, Xabi Alonso exceeded them.

The defending champions, who are trying to win a third straight major title, advanced to the European Championship semifinals with a not-so-commanding 2-0 win over France on Saturday. In the next round, Portugal and star player Cristiano Ronaldo could provide a much sterner test.

"These types of games, in this type of competition, are always very tense," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said of Saturday's win, "and you need to have the know-how to win them."

Alonso provided that.

The Real Madrid midfielder celebrated his 100th international appearance with an early header and a late penalty, a pair of rare goals from a player more accustomed to anchoring the back of the six-man midfield rather than pushing forward with the rest.

"I could never have imagined to reach my 100th cap, to go to the semis and score two goals," Alonso said. "Hopefully the 101st will be better."

Spain's next match will come on Wednesday against Portugal, again at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk. And with Ronaldo improving as the tournament progresses, Spain will likely have to improve as well to earn a chance to defend its title.

Saturday's opening goal was the result of excellent one-touch soccer ? the hallmark of Spain's game. Andres Iniesta prodded the ball through for Jordi Alba, who whipped a perfect cross from the left. Alonso timed his run so well that no France defender picked him up.

Spain wrapped things up after France right back Anthony Reveillere barged into substitute forward Pedro Rodriguez in injury time. Alonso coolly sent goalkeeper Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot, looking right but clipping the ball firmly to the left.

"He knows how to sacrifice himself, help the team and where to play," Del Bosque said of Alonso. "He is one of the attacking strengths of ours. He knows how to create and finish."

The win was Spain's first ever over France in a competitive match in seven attempts. But France wasn't that competitive Saturday, managing only one shot on target.

"When you lose a game there's always something missing, I'm not sure if it's possession or technical ability," France coach Laurent Blanc said. "The lads gave everything and it's very hard to play against Spain. We blocked their left flank, which is their strong point."

France's best moment came in the 32nd minute when Yohan Cabaye's free kick was tipped over by Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

"They were there for the taking," Blanc said. "We knew we would get some chances, and the only thing I regret is that they scored off their first good chance. If we had gone in level at 0-0 at halftime, then I think we would have had more room in the second half."

Although the French made it out of the group stage for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, the manner of Saturday's loss will be disappointing for a team touted as one of the tournament's dangerous outsiders.

France formed a deep defensive line and watched awe-struck as Spain flicked the ball around like a training session. The Spanish made dummy runs everywhere early on, and had a penalty claim waved away in the sixth minute when Cesc Fabregas tumbled under a challenge from left back Gael Clichy.

Fabregas also started against Italy in Spain's opening 1-1 draw, sparking criticism against Del Bosque for not picking a recognized striker. But against France, it worked.

Spain pulled a compact France team out of position in the 10th minute as Iniesta curled a ball behind center half Adil Rami but it was too far for Fabregas to reach.

Karim Benzema, looking for his first goal at a major tournament, looked sharp and made some good runs, but the Real Madrid striker rarely got any service. He was fouled in the 32nd after running onto Florent Malouda's pass, and Cabaye's free kick was sailing into the top left corner before Casillas shuffled across quickly to save it.

While the French averted a repeat of the 2010 World Cup crisis ? when the entire squad went on strike at training ? the buildup to Saturday's game was marred by tensions in the camp following a heated dressing room bust-up after the 2-0 loss to Sweden.

"The big teams have all showed up at this Euro, and they will be in the semifinals," Blanc said. "Unfortunately, France won't be."

Choosing the Right College/University for Your Child | Internet ...

The time comes when every parent has to assist their child in making the right choice of university or college. This all important decision should not be left until the last moment but requires considerable time, thought, and research. When you consider the fact that three to four years of your child?s life plus an investment of thousands of dollars into his/her education is required, it is prudent to get involved as a parent.

So how do you ensure that you?re making the right decision?

The first thing that parents need to do is know your child. You should know what his interests and gifting are. If your child loves the Arts, then you cannot be, or should not be forcing him to pursue the Sciences. You should also know whether or not your teen works best independently or in a group setting; or whether he learns better in a small classroom setting. Is your teen easily distracted and lacks self-discipline or is he focused and disciplined? All these factors will play a major part in your choice of college or university.

Secondly, much research has to be done on the programs that your child is interested in and compare and contrast each college/university?s offering of that program. Which ones are best geared towards his career goals and which subjects are a better fit for what he?s interested in.

Thirdly, cost is usually a significant factor in coming to a decision. Therefore, after narrowing the choices down based on the first two factors, you must compare the cost of your child studying at one particular college as against another. In addition to tuition, your finances will determine whether or not your child can attend a local college/university or one away from home. Can he attend the more expensive Ivy League university or will it be more affordable for him to attend an equally reputable but less expensive one?

Fourthly, it is also a good thing to consider campus spirit as you?d want your teen to enjoy campus life. What clubs does each university/college offer and what opportunities are there for self-development or for community service?

Lastly, it is good to visit the various campuses and get a feel of the environment in which your teen will be. On campus tours, you?ll meet professors and lecturers and hear directly from them on their accessibility.

This is indeed one of the most exciting times in a parents and teens life and after all the research is done, both parties should feel comfortable and happy with the decision made.

Son accuses Sandusky of abuse as jury deliberates

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? As jurors deliberated for more than eight hours on charges Jerry Sandusky sexually abused 10 boys over a 15-year period, new accusations of abuse were leveled against the former Penn State assistant coach by a pair of new accusers, including his adopted son.

Just a few hours into deliberations, Matt Sandusky ? one of Sandusky's six adopted children ? came forward for the first time to say in a statement that his father had abused him. The statement didn't detail the abuse allegation.

Meanwhile, Travis Weaver, a man suing Jerry Sandusky, told NBC's "Rock Center with Brian Williams" that Sandusky abused him more than 100 times over four years starting in 1992, when he was 10.

Weaver, 30, was named as John Doe in the lawsuit filed in Philadelphia in November.

Sequestered during deliberations, the jury was under orders from Judge John Cleland to ponder only the case placed in their hands Thursday afternoon after hearing starkly different portrayals of the case's facts during closing remarks. Deliberations were scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Friday.

Prosecutors have called the 68-year-old Sandusky "a serial, predatory pedophile" whose charity for at-risk youth, The Second Mile, was his source of likely victims who would be dazzled by gifts, grateful for his attention and ? perhaps most importantly ? unlikely to speak up. His arrest in November ignited a scandal at Penn State that led to the dismissals of beloved Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and the university's president.

"He molested and abused and hurt these children horribly," Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan III told the jury in closing statements Thursday. "He knows he did it and you know he did it.

"Find him guilty of everything."

The defense portrayed Sandusky as the hapless victim of a conspiracy to convict him of heinous crimes. They explain the 48 charges against him as the result of an investigatory team out for blood and accusers who willingly played along in hopes of securing a big payday.

"They went after him, and I submit to you they were going to get him hell or high water, even if they had to coach witnesses," defense attorney Joe Amendola said in his animated and impassioned closing remarks.

The elder Sandusky, who faces life in prison if convicted of the allegations, smiled and chuckled to himself as prosecutors wrapped up closing remarks. His wife, Dottie, leaned forward in her seat with a concerned look, resting her chin in her hands.

Some of the eight accusers who testified described showering with the longtime assistant; others spoke of lengthy relationships featuring lavish gifts and out-of-state trips. One testified he felt at times like Sandusky's son, at others his "girlfriend."

A second accuser ? a foster child at the time authorities say he was abused ? said Sandusky threatened he would never see his biological family again if he told anyone he was forced to perform sex acts but later took it back and claimed to love him.

One accuser testified to receiving what he called "creepy love letters" from Sandusky. "I know that I have made my share of mistakes," read one handwritten note. "However, I hope that I will be able to say that I cared. There has been love in my heart."

The defense said the longwinded letters were simply the manifestation of a personality disorder characterized by excessive emotionality and attention seeking.

Two people who prosecutors say were sexually abused by Sandusky haven't been identified. The charges related to them come through other witnesses, including Mike McQueary, a former assistant coach who said he saw Sandusky having anal sex with a boy in a football facility shower. It was McQueary's testimony that touched off the massive scandal that rocked Penn State and forced a re-examination of the role of college administrators in reporting abuse allegations.

After more than eight hours of deliberations Thursday night, the jury returned briefly to the courtroom to ask Cleland if they could rehear testimony from McQueary and Dr. Jonathan Dranov, a friend of the McQueary family who testified that McQueary gave him a different account of what he saw.

Cleland told the jurors that McQueary's testimony was about two hours in length and Dranov's was about 20 minutes long and suggested they revisit the McQueary testimony Friday.

Sandusky has denied the allegations, but did not testify in his own defense. Jurors are aware, however, of the denials he gave "Rock Center" just after his arrest. In it, Sandusky seemed to stumble at times and struggled to give direct answers to questions about his conduct.

Asked if he was sexually attracted to boys, Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas: "Sexually attracted, you know, I, I enjoy young people. I, I love to be around them. ... No, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."

McGettigan seized on that in closing arguments, saying: "I would think that the automatic response, if someone asks you if you're a criminal, a pedophile, a child molester, or anything along those lines, would be: 'You're crazy. No. Are you nuts?'"

Prosecutors said Sandusky used gifts and the allure of Penn State's vaunted football program to attract and abuse vulnerable boys who came from troubled homes, often ones without a father figure in the house.

As during his opening statements, McGettigan during his closing arguments put up smiling pictures of eight accusers when they were children; all testified at trial that Sandusky molested them. Standing behind Sandusky, McGettigan implored the jury for a conviction.

"What you should do is come out and say to the defendant that he molested and abused and give them back their souls," McGettigan told jurors. "I give them to you. Acknowledge and give them justice."

Amendola argued that Sandusky was targeted by investigators who coached accusers into making false claims about a generous man whose charity gave them much-needed love.

"So out of the blue (after) all these years, when Jerry Sandusky is in his mid-50s, he decides to become a pedophile? Does that make sense to anybody?" Amendola asked rhetorically.

Closing arguments came after seven days of testimony, some of it explicitly describing abuse suffered at the hands of Sandusky, including touching in showers, fondling and in some cases forced oral or anal sex.

The jury, which includes nine people with ties to Penn State, had already begun deliberating when Matt Sandusky's attorneys issued a statement alleging that Sandusky abused one of his six adopted children.

"During the trial, Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse," Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici said in the statement. "At Matt's request, we immediately arranged a meeting between him and the prosecutors and investigators.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy. There will be no further comment."

Karl Rominger, one of Jerry Sandusky's lawyers, declined to comment.

Matt Sandusky went to live with Sandusky and his wife as a foster child and was adopted by them as an adult.

Shortly after Jerry Sandusky's arrest, Matt Sandusky's ex-wife went to court to keep her former father-in-law away from their three young children. Jill Jones successfully obtained a restraining order forbidding the children from sleeping over at their grandparents' home.

Around the same time, details emerged that Matt Sandusky had attempted suicide just four months after first going to live with the couple in 1995. He had come into the home through The Second Mile.

Shortly after the suicide attempt, Sandusky's probation officer wrote, "The probation department has some serious concerns about the juvenile's safety and his current progress in placement with the Sandusky family," according to court records supplied to The Associated Press by his birth mother, Debra Long.

Despite those concerns, probation and child welfare officials recommended continued placement with the Sandusky family, and the judge overseeing his case agreed.

During testimony last week, an accuser known as Victim 4 said Matt Sandusky was living at the Sandusky home at the time he stayed there overnight and testified that Jerry Sandusky came into the shower with the two boys and "started pumping his hand full of soap." Matt Sandusky shut off the shower and left, appearing nervous, the witness said.
