Paul leads Clippers past NBA-leading Thunder (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Blake Griffin's jaw-dropping one-handed jam over Kendrick Perkins sent Los Angeles Clippers fans into a frenzy, fired up his teammates, lit up the Twitterverse and burned the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Griffin had 22 points to go with Chris Paul's 26 points and 14 assists in a 112-100 victory Monday night that snapped the Thunder's four-game winning streak in a matchup of division leaders.

Griffin downplayed his monster move after the game, a sly smile only briefly breaking his serious expression.

"CP commands so much attention out there. He came off the pick-and-roll and he hit me in stride," Griffin said.

Paul added: "I told Blake after the game, `Thanks for letting me be part of that.'"

DeAndre Jordan grabbed Griffin from behind in a celebratory bear hug as the basket got replayed over and over in the third quarter.

Jordan, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds, couldn't help himself.

"I was shocked. I didn't know what to do, so I just grabbed him. I hit him kind of hard," he said. "I'm going to go home and watch it again. It's probably going to be the screensaver on my phone."

Griffin said he knew he'd made an impression judging by the crowd's raucous response. Then he felt Jordan behind him.

"He armlocked me," Griffin said. "I couldn't breathe."

The reaction on Twitter came fast and furious.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald tweeted: "Blake Griffin just made one of the top dunks of the season. Maybe even his career. (hashtag) Beast."

Tracy McGrady of the Atlanta Hawks weighed in with "yo, crazy crazy dunk by the dude Blake Griffin."

Even Shaquille O'Neal's ex-wife was impressed.

Shaunie O'Neal tweeted: "OMG!!! Did y'all just see Blake Griffin dunk!!!!! Daaayyyummm!"

Paul had 26 points and 14 assists, Caron Butler also had 22 points, Chauncey Billups scored 13 and Mo Williams 12 as the Pacific-leading Clippers dunked with high-flying abandon against the team with the NBA's best record at 16-4. They won their third in a row to follow up a 109-105 victory at Denver a night earlier that began a stretch of five games in seven nights.

"We're not going to read too much into it," Paul said of the back-to-back wins. "It let us know what we're capable of. We can explode offensively."

Kevin Durant had 36 points and 13 rebounds, and Russell Westbrook added 31 for the Northwest-leading Thunder, whose league-best road record dropped to 8-3. They had won 11 of their previous 12.

"Chris Paul was running around, getting what he wanted to get on the floor and making passes to guys for wide-open dunks and 3s," Durant said. "It's tough to stop."

Griffin's monster mash had everyone talking and tweeting, but the Clippers put together a stunning sequence going into halftime.

They shocked the Thunder with four consecutive 3-pointers in less than a minute to lead 64-46. The flurry by Williams (two), Butler (one) and Billups (one) stopped the Thunder's 11-2 run that had drawn them within six points.

"I told Mo that might have been the greatest exchange I have been part of since I've been in the NBA," Paul said. "That got the crowd into it. Four 3s in under a minute is unbelievable."

Jordan said: "We were just hot. It really didn't look like it was real. We were on a high, but we knew we had to come out in the third and knock them out flat."

The Thunder bumbled their way into the half, with Westbrook and Durant combining on three straight turnovers that led to the Clippers' long-range fireworks. Williams and Butler had two steals in the run.

"That doesn't happen, and it probably won't happen again the rest of the year, that a team will make that many 3s in a minute," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "But they made the shots. They started the game with a lot of urgency and they had us back on our heels."

Los Angeles shot 71 percent from long range in a half that also featured a series of huge dunks by Jordan, Griffin, Durant and Westbrook, although both teams missed their share of dunks, too.

Daequan Cook was the only other Oklahoma City player in double figures with 12 points. Durant and Westbrook scored all but two of the Thunder's 25 points in the third quarter, which the Clippers ended on a 3-pointer by Paul to lead 90-70.

Durant and Westbrook began the fourth on the bench, although they both stood up when Cook hit his second 3-pointer of the period to get the Thunder to 95-81. Griffin then scored five in a row, capped by a two-handed jam that extended the Clippers' lead to 100-81.

The Thunder outscored Los Angeles 30-22 in the fourth, but never made a big run to get close.

The Clippers made 13 3-pointers ? just off their season high of 14 against Denver on Sunday.

They made 10 3s in the first half, led by four from Butler, who connected from his favorite spot in the left corner.

The Thunder's only lead was four points to start the game.

Notes: Butler reached the 10,000-point mark on his third 3-pointer in the first quarter. ... Durant and Westbrook have scored at least 25 points each 37 times in their four seasons together. ... The Clippers improved to 10-2 at home. ... It was the Clippers' 12th consecutive sellout this season and 24th in a row overall dating to last season. The crowd of 19,404 included Larry King and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Dan Haren.

SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire available tomorrow for $30 in the Amazon Appstore

Though Sling Media has long been offering apps for Android phones and tablets, Kindle Fire owners have until now been left out in the cold (you know, the whole lack-of-Android-Market-access thing). Tomorrow, though, Fire owners can get their fill of live and recorded TV when the SlingPlayer app goes on sale in the Amazon Appstore. With a price of $29.99, you'll pay the same as you would for any of Sling's other mobile apps, and as far as we could tell when we first got hands-on at CES, the interface is about the same as what you'd get on an Android handset. In case you need a refresher, we've got a gallery of images below, and we've posted that source link early, though you'll have to twiddle your thumbs until tomorrow when you can officially get your download on.

Body clock receptor linked to diabetes in new genetic study

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? A study recently published in Nature Genetics has found new evidence for a link between the body clock hormone melatonin and type 2 diabetes. The study found that people who carry rare genetic mutations in the receptor for melatonin have a much higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The findings should help scientists to more accurately assess personal diabetes risk and could lead to the development of personalised treatments.

Previous research has found that people who work night shifts have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Studies have also found that if volunteers have their sleep disrupted repeatedly for three days, they temporarily develop symptoms of diabetes.

The body's sleep-wake cycle is controlled by the hormone melatonin, which has effects including drowsiness and lowering body temperature. In 2008, a genetic study led by Imperial College London discovered that people with common variations in the gene for MT2, a receptor for melatonin, have a slightly higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The new study reveals that carrying any of four rare mutations in the MT2 gene increases a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes six times. The release of insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels, is known to be regulated by melatonin. The researchers suggest that mutations in the MT2 gene may disrupt the link between the body clock and insulin release, leading to abnormal control of blood sugar.

Professor Philippe Froguel, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, who led the study, said: "Blood sugar control is one of the many processes regulated by the body's biological clock. This study adds to our understanding of how the gene that carries the blueprint for a key component in the clock can influence people's risk of diabetes.

"We found very rare variants of the MT2 gene that have a much larger effect than more common variants discovered before. Although each mutation is rare, they are common in the sense that everyone has a lot of very rare mutations in their DNA. Cataloguing these mutations will enable us to much more accurately assess a person's risk of disease based on their genetics."

In the study, the Imperial team and their collaborators at several institutions in the UK and France examined the MT2 gene in 7,632 people to look for more unusual variants that have a bigger effect on disease risk. They found 40 variants associated with type 2 diabetes, four of which were very rare and rendered the receptor completely incapable of responding to melatonin. The scientists then confirmed the link with these four variants in an additional sample of 11,854 people.

Professor Froguel and his team analysed each mutation by testing what effect they have on the MT2 receptor in human cells in the lab. The mutations that completely prevented the receptor from working proved to have a very big effect on diabetes risk, suggesting that there is a direct link between MT2 and the disease.

The research was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the National Institute for Health Research and the Medical Research Council in the UK and the Agence National de la Recherche, the Contrat de Projets Etat-R?gion Nord-Pas-De-Calais, the Soci?t? Francophone du Diab?te, the Fondation Recherche M?dicale and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France.

Too little, too late? Factory jobs making comeback

John Schoen, msnbc.com

Manufacturing accounts for 9 percent of the U.S. workforce, compared with 28 percent in 1960 and 12 percent just a decade ago.

By Allison Linn

President Barack Obama is on the road this week touting a plan to bring jobs back to the United States, in part by bolstering manufacturing here.

It?s no secret that?s a tough challenge.

The United States has lately seen an increase in manufacturing jobs, something Obama noted in his State of the Union address Tuesday. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 330,000 manufacturing jobs have been created over the past two years, bringing the total to nearly 11.8 million as of December.

Still, that is a nearly 2 million short of the?13.7 million manufacturing jobs that existed when the economy went into recession in December 2007. And it?s far fewer than in the late 1970s, when more than 19 million Americans -- out of a much smaller work force -- were employed in manufacturing, which was?seen as a key path to a middle-class life.

Manufacturing may be bouncing back, but it is returning in a far different form.?The recession washed out many inefficent companies, leaving behind?operations that even leaner and more highly automated. That means they can make do?with?fewer workers even as they increase production.

As a recent series of stories in The New York Times has highlighted, successful companies like Apple have prospered largely by mastering a global supply chain that depends on sending work overseas to take advantage of low-cost labor.

Obama is hoping that tax breaks and other incentives will help encourage manufacturers to keep jobs here, or even bring some back. Time will tell whether that is true.

Is Oprah Really Blue Ivy's Godmother?

Reports surfaced earlier this week that none other than Oprah is the godmother of Beyonce and Jay-Z's newborn baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter. But is it true?

It is not. Oprah is not the godmother.

She may be a fairy godmother in a non-official sense - she did send baby Blue an entire trunk full of books already - but she hasn't been given any title.

Bey PhotoO Pic

Winfrey's BFF Gayle King said: "Let me just say, if [this] is true, it is news to her. You know, she was heading to South Africa when the baby was born."

A separate source close to the power couple's camp also tells E! News that this is not true, and that Media Takeout was wrong (in a stunning revelation).

Again, no need to worry, though, as Winfrey is close to Beyonce and Jay-Z, so Blue Ivy should still get first dibs on Winfrey's annual Favorite Things list.

Britain ranks top risks posed by climate change (AP)

LONDON ? Britain says coastlines, wildlife and even the nation's most famous dish are under threat from climate change in its first-ever national assessment of likely risks.

The 2.8 million pound ($4.4 million) study sets out the most pressing problems expected to affect the United Kingdom as a result of climate change.

Britain's government said Thursday that higher temperatures could see as many as 5,900 more people die as a result of hot summers, but predicts a sharp reduction in deaths due to cold weather by the 2050s.

Other risks include increased pollution and energy demands.

The report says Britain's stocks of cod ? a key component of the nation's beloved fish and chips dish ? will dwindle, but should be replaced by more plentiful numbers of plaice and sole.

TV ratings: Fox wins night with "Idol" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Fox scored a decisive win Wednesday night on the strength of "American Idol" and a preview of the new Kiefer Sutherland drama "Touch," while NBC's new comedy "Are You There Chelsea" dropped significantly to hit a ratings low, according to preliminary numbers.

"Idol," airing at 8 p.m., was down slightly from last week but was easily the night's top-rated and most-watched show of the night, drawing a 6.4 rating/18 share in the adults 18-49 demographic and 19.5 million total viewers. A preview of "Touch" the following hour posted a 3.9/10 in the demographic -- the second-highest drama debut this season, behind ABC's "Once Upon a Time" -- and 11.8 million total viewers. ("Touch" officially premieres March 19.) Combined, "Idol" and "Touch" gave Fox an average 5.2/14 in the demographic and an average 15.6 million total viewers.

On NBC, "Whitney" at 8 p.m. dipped to 1.4/4 in the demographic and 4.4 million total viewers, while "Are You There Chelsea," which premiered to so-so numbers earlier this month, had a 1.4/4 in the demographic and 3.9 million total viewers. It was down 18 percent in the ratings from last week. "Law & Order: SVU" repeats filled out the evening.

Following a "Criminal Minds" repeat at 8 p.m., CBS ran a new "Criminal Minds" at 9 p.m., which was up 13 percent versus last week for a 3.6/9 in the demographic and 13.6 million total viewers. "CSI" the following hour jumped 18 percent over last week, taking a 3.3/9 in the demographic and 14 million total viewers.

ABC ran only repeats.

Taco Bell enters crowded breakfast arena

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Yo quiero Taco Bell breakfast burrito!

The Mexican-style fast-food chain that caters to the late-night snacking crowd with tacos and gorditas, introduced a breakfast menu Thursday at almost 800 restaurants in 14 states.

If the launch goes well, Taco Bell plans to begin selling its breakfast burritos and hash browns in its 5,600 locations nationwide by 2014.

Taco Bell is entering the mad scramble by fast-food heavyweights to compete for the morning on-the-go crowd. Breakfast has become the most important meal of the day for restaurants, accounting for virtually all of the industry's growth in the past five years.

"Right now we're not getting our fair share of that," said Brian Niccol, Taco Bell's chief marketing and innovation officer. "We want to get our fair share and then some."

Breakfast's new popularity has a lot to do with the economy. When people are out of work, they dine out much at all. Lunch sales, in particular, fall because they're not grabbing a bite to eat during the workday. And at a time when people are cutting back on discretionary spending, breakfast is a cheaper alternative when eating out than dinner.

Fast-food restaurants have taken notice. Subway started offering breakfast in 2010. Wendy's is starting to get into the breakfast game, too. And Burger King, Starbucks and McDonald's in recent years have been expanding they're offerings of everything from breakfast sandwiches to oatmeal and smoothies.

For its part, Taco Bell is teaming with such popular brands as Johnsonville, Cinnabon, Tropicana and Seattle's Best for its breakfast menu that range in price from 99 cents to $2.79. The menu includes burritos stuffed with eggs and either sausage, bacon or steak; sausage and egg wraps; hash browns; hot or iced coffee; and orange juice.

Customers can buy the breakfast items in Taco Bell locations in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado. A limited number of stores in Texas, Ohio and Oklahoma will also have the breakfast menu.

Some Taco Bell restaurants already are open around the clock to accommodate the new breakfast offerings. Others will open at least one hour earlier, which means an 8 or 9 a.m. opening for many. The stores will stop serving breakfast at 11 a.m.

That's a later start time than most other fast-food chains offering breakfast have. But it's a reflection of Taco Bell's core customers ? the 18- to-20-somethings ? who generally aren't up at the crack of dawn.

"What we found is, they're not the customer that shows up at 6 a.m. for breakfast," Niccol said. "We can get those guys on board, they become the evangelists, and then we can start adding additional hours for people that want breakfast at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m."

The new breakfast menu and hours come a year after Taco Bell faced a short-lived lawsuit claiming that its seasoned beef filling did not have enough beef to be billed as such. Taco Bell denounced the claim as false and spent millions in advertising to defend its taco filling and shore up its image.

The suit was dropped about three months after it was filed by an Alabama-based law firm, but Taco Bell still has struggled to regain momentum after the bad publicity.

Revenue at Taco Bell restaurants in the U.S. open at least a year ? an indicator of a restaurant's health ? have fallen in each quarter since the suit was filed. Taco Bell, which is a subsidiary of Louisville, Ky.-based Yum Brands Inc., accounts for about 60 percent of U.S. profit for Yum.

Women Can Take Steps to Prevent Cervical Cancer (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Women need to get recommended Pap tests, while girls and young women should be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) to protect them from cervical cancer, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises during Cervical Health Awareness Month.

Cervical cancer kills more than 4,000 women in the United States each year. Many of them could have been saved by routine Pap tests, which look for abnormal cells in the cervix that can turn into cancer. When caught early, those abnormal cells are highly treatable, according to the college.

More than 12,000 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

The good news is that the rate of cervical cancer in the United States has fallen more than 50 percent in the past three decades due to the widespread use of the Pap test, the college says.

Cervical cancer is caused by certain strains of HPV, a common sexually transmitted disease. HPV can also cause genital and anal warts and cancer of the mouth, head and neck, penis and anus.

Women can help protect themselves against cervical cancer by being monogamous, practicing safe sex and getting periodic Pap tests. In addition, girls and young women aged 9 to 26 should receive the HPV vaccine, the college recommends.

A young women should get her first Pap test when she turns 21 and continue having a Pap test every two years until age 30. Women age 30 and beyond who have three consecutive negative Pap test results can be screened once every three years, the college says.

Sony Ericsson details GLONASS support in Xperia phones

Android Central

Sony (Ericsson) has taken to its mobile Developer World blog to confirm thats 2011 Xperia smartphones, as well as the recently-announced Xperia S and Xperia Ion, fully support the Russian GLONASS positioning service in addition to GPS. GLONASS is run by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, and performs similar tasks to GPS, but operates independently of it. By using information from both systems, it's possible to get a more accurate fix of your location in built-up areas where GPS alone may struggle.

Sony says that all its devices equipped with Snadragon S2 and S3 chips fully support both GLONASS and GPS for improved location-tracking accuracy. That means if you have a 2011 Xperia phone, or you're planning on picking up an Xperia S or Ion, you may have an edge over devices which only support GPS. Poles protest ACTA online and on the streets (AP)

WARSAW, Poland ? Hundreds of people waged a street protest in Warsaw on Tuesday to protest the government's plan to sign an international copyright treaty, while several popular websites also shut down for an hour over the issue.

Poland's support for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA, has sparked days of protest, including attacks on government sites, by groups who fear it could lead to online censorship.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk insisted Tuesday that his government will not give in to the protesters. He vowed that Poland will sign the international agreement, which is aimed at protecting intellectual property ? like music and books ? and products including pharmaceuticals and designer items. ACTA enjoys widespread support from the producers of music, movies and a range of goods enjoying copyright protections.

"There will be no concessions to brutal blackmail," Tusk said at a news conference.

Several popular websites replaced their normal content with a statement about ACTA, including several that are popular with young people and carry a mix of celebrity news, jokes, funny photographs and other entertaining material.

One site, http://www.wykop.pl, said that "under the banner of fighting piracy and concerns about intellectual property, ACTA will limit the rights of each of us."

At the street protest, held in front of a European Union office, people carried banners that said "Stop ACTA," while some put tape over their mouths to signify their fears that ACTA will infringe on freedom of expression online.

An extremist right-wing group is planning a separate protest Wednesday to oppose ACTA.

However, an influential group representing authors and composers ? known by its Polish acronym ZAiKS ? has thrown its support behind ACTA. ZAiKS argued that ACTA will not hurt Internet freedom but protect the rights of creators. It said that Internet piracy is now robbing artists and the state treasury of hundreds of millions of zlotys (many millions of dollars) in income.

ACTA shares some similarities with the hotly debated Stop Online Piracy Act in the U.S., which was shelved by lawmakers last week after Wikipedia and Google blacked out or partially obscured their websites for a day in protest.

In recent days, a group calling itself Anonymous attacked Polish government websites, leaving several paralyzed on Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday, most appeared to be working again, though the prime minister's site was unreachable.

Still, Polish leaders are vowing to stick to plans to sign ACTA in Tokyo on Thursday.

ACTA has been negotiated by a number of industrialized countries that have been struggling for ways to fight counterfeiting and intellectual property theft ? crimes that cause huge losses to the movie and music industries and many other sectors.

The far-reaching agreement would cover everything from counterfeit pharmaceuticals to fake designer handbags to online piracy. The United States signed ACTA in October in Tokyo along with seven other countries: Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Morocco and Singapore.

North Korea credits new leader with nuke testing (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea on Friday credited new leader Kim Jong Un with spearheading past nuclear testing, as it adds to a growing personality cult that portrays the young son of late leader Kim Jong Il as a confident military commander.

Kim Jong Un's youth ? he's believed to be in his late 20s ? and quick rise have spurred questions in foreign capitals about his readiness for leadership. But North Korea has dismissed such worries in recent days, saying Kim Jong Un worked closely with his father on military and economic matters.

The North's official Uriminzokkiri website said Friday that Kim "frightened" the country's enemies by commanding nuclear testing in the past. North Korea tested nuclear devices in 2006 and 2009, but the website didn't specify which tests Kim oversaw.

Uriminzokkiri described Kim Jong Un as "fully equipped" with the qualities of an extraordinary general, even during his years at Kim Il Sung Military University. The website also repeated the North's claim that he was involved in satellite launching but didn't elaborate.

North Korea's linking of Kim Jong Un to past nuclear testing comes as it pushes for the resumption of long-stalled six-nation aid-for-nuclear disarmament talks that also include China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Washington and its allies want the North to first show it is serious about previous disarmament commitments.

North Korea last week questioned Washington's generosity and sincerity, but suggested it remains open to suspending its uranium enrichment program if it can get the food aid it wants.

Kim Jong Un took over after his father and longtime ruler Kim Jong Il died in mid-December and has quickly been given many of the country's most important titles.

He was introduced as heir only in September 2010. Before that he had been kept out of the public eye for most of his life. He was quickly promoted to four-star general and named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Some of North Korea's neighbors and Washington have expressed worry about whether he can lead a nation of 24 million with a nuclear program as well as chronic trouble feeding all its people.

Kim Jong Il had 20 years of training under his own father, Kim Il Sung, before taking over. Even after his father's 1994 death, Kim Jong Il observed a three-year mourning period before formally assuming leadership.

A senior official told The Associated Press recently that Kim Jong Un spent years working closely with his late father and helped him make key policy decisions on economic and military affairs.

North Korea has also made it clear that Kim Jong Un will continue Kim Jong Il's "songun," or military-first, policy, and a steady stream of reports and images from state media has sought to show him as a fearless military commander who is comfortable with leadership.

North Korea also reported Friday that Kim Jong Un inspected two more military units.

Earlier this month, North Korea's state-run broadcaster aired a documentary that showed Kim Jong Un observing an April 2009 launch of a long-range rocket. It was the first indication of his involvement in the launch.

The documentary quoted Kim as threatening to wage war against any nation attempting to intercept the rocket, which North Korea claimed was carrying a communications satellite but the United States, South Korea and Japan said was really a test of its long-range missile technology.

Grounded ship shifts overnight, rescue ops halted (AP)

ROME ? The cruise ship grounded off Tuscany shifted again on its rocky perch, forcing the supension Friday of search and rescue operations for the 21 people still missing.

It was not clear if the movements registered overnight by onboard sensors were just vibrations as the Costa Concordia settles on the rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio or if the massive ocean liner is slipping off the reef.

The ship's movements are being carefully monitored since any significant shift could be dangerous for divers trying to locate those missing after the Concordia ran aground Jan. 13. An additional fear is that any significant movement could damage tanks holding a half-million gallons of fuel oil.

"The ship is not in safe enough conditions for rescue operations to continue," said Coast Guard spokesman Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro.

The $450 million Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it slammed into well-marked rocks off the island of Giglio after the captain made an unauthorized diversion Friday from his programmed route. The ship then keeled over on its side.

Capt. Francesco Schettino, who was jailed after he left the ship before everyone was safely evacuated, is under house arrest, facing possible charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship.

Eleven people have been confirmed dead and 21 others are still missing.

Late Thursday, Costa-owner Carnival Corp. announced it was conducting a comprehensive audit of all 10 of its cruise lines to review safety and emergency response procedures in the wake of the Costa disaster.

In addition, the Miami-based company, the world's largest cruise operator, said it was conducting an outside review of the Concordia grounding itself.

Divers resume search for 21 missing from ship (AP)

ROME ? Divers resumed the search Thursday for 21 people still missing after a cruise ship capsized off the Tuscan coast, but rough seas forecast for later in the day added an element of uncertainty to the operation and plans to begin pumping fuel from the stranded vessel.

The $450 million Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it slammed into a reef and capsized Friday after the captain made an unauthorized diversion from his programmed route and strayed into the perilous waters.

Eleven people have been confirmed dead, their bodies removed from the ship and frigid waters.

Divers were focusing on an evacuation route on the fourth level, now about 18 meters (60 feet) below the surface, where five bodies were found earlier this week, Navy spokesman Alessandro Busonero told Sky TG 24.

Officials restarted the search after determining the ship had stabilized after shifting on the rocks 24 hours earlier.

The ship's sudden movement also postponed the start of the weekslong operation to extract the half-million gallons of fuel on board the vessel, as Italy's environment minister warned Parliament of the ecological implications if the ship sinks.

"Today is an important day, the weather forecasts are negative, rough sea, we'll have to see how the ship reacts to that," firefighter spokesman Luca Cari said Thursday.

Authorities on Wednesday identified the first victim: Sandor Feher, a 38-year-old Hungarian musician working aboard, who a fellow musician said helped crying children into lifejackets, then disappeared while trying to retrieve his beloved violin from his cabin. His body was found inside the wreck and identified by his mother who traveled to Italy, according to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.

Of the 11 dead and 21 missing, Italian officials have only released 27 names so far. They are two Americans, 12 Germans, six Italians, four French, and one person each from Hungary, India and Peru.

Among the missing are an Italian father and 5-year-old daughter. The girl's mother issued a fresh appeal to speed the search and for passengers who saw the pair to come forward to help determine where they were last seen.

"Don't stop, bring home my daughter. Get her out," Susy Albertini, 28, said on Italian television Wednesday evening after meeting with government and port officials in Tuscany.

Albertini last saw her daughter, Dayana Arlotti, on Thursday when she dropped her off at nursery school in Rimini on Italy's Adriadic coast, according to La Voce di Romagna newspaper. Her estranged husband picked up the girl afterward to prepare for the cruise.

William Arlotti, 36, had taken his daughter on on the cruise with his girlfriend, Michela Marconcelli, who survived. She reported seeing Dayana, who was wearing a lifejacket, slide into the water when the boat shifted, but said someone helped retrieve her, the newspaper reported.

Marconcelli said she was pushed forward onto the life raft, and lost track of her companion and his daughter.

Other missing include retirees Jerry and Barbara Heil of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The couple were treating themselves after putting four children through college.

The Heil children said in a blog post Wednesday that their parents were not among the passengers whose bodies were recently recovered, and they were praying that weather conditions would improve so authorities could resume search operations.

Capt. Francesco Schettino, who was jailed after he left the ship before everyone was safely evacuated, was placed under house arrest Tuesday, facing possible charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship.

The ship's operator, Crociere Costa SpA, has accused Schettino of causing the wreck by making the unapproved detour, and the captain has acknowledged carrying out what he called a "tourist navigation" that brought the ship closer to Giglio. Costa has said such a navigational "fly by" was done last Aug. 9-10, after being approved by the company and Giglio port authorities.

However, Lloyd's List Intelligence, a leading maritime publication, said Wednesday its tracking of the ship's August route showed it actually took the Concordia slightly closer to Giglio than the course that caused Friday's disaster.

"This is not a black-and-white case," Richard Meade, editor of Lloyd's List, said in a statement.

"Our data suggests that both routes took the vessel within 200 meters (yards) of the impact point and that the authorized route was actually closer to shore."

New audio of Schettino's communications with the coast guard during the crisis emerged Wednesday, with the captain claiming he ended up in a life raft after he tripped and fell into the water.

"I did not abandon a ship with 100 people on board, the ship suddenly listed and we were thrown into the water," Schettino said, according to a transcript published Wednesday in the Corriere della Sera paper.

Initial audio of Schettino's conversations made headlines on Tuesday, showing an increasingly exasperated coast guard officer ordering Schettino back on board to direct the evacuation, and the captain resisting, saying it was too dark and the ship was tipping.

The officer's order, "Get back on board, (expletive!)" has entered the Italian lexicon, becoming a Twitter hashtag and adorning T-shirts.

When Does a Medical Student Overstep Her Boundaries?

(Disclaimer: details of this story have been changed to protect the privacy of those involved.)

Six months into medical school, I learned the place I feel most like a doctor is not in class or in the hospital. It is at home, with my family.

Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting my family for a long holiday break. I was greeted with a barrage of innocuous medical questions. My father wanted to know about his arthritis medication. My aunt was more concerned about her headaches.

?You should ask your doctor,? I said each time, summoning my template response. I was not frustrated; questions like these I expected, and I knew how to handle.

A week later, my parents received a phone call. It was a close friend, saying he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

My parents were devastated. I wanted to play the part of caring daughter, supporting a grief-stricken family. I had no interest in playing local medical expert. I wanted to offer comfort, not wisdom.

But the questions inevitably came. My mother came to my room that evening holding a pad filled with questions she scribbled down from the phone conversation. For the first time, I was forced to confront the boundaries of my role.

It is plainly wrong for a first-year medical student to offer any sort of advice. Yet as she progressed through her questions, it felt wrong, too, to plead blanket ignorance. Some of her questions seemed purely academic.

Did I advise on the course of treatment the friend was considering? No. Give a prognosis? Of course not.

But did I explain how someone who never smoked a cigarette in his life can still get lung cancer? And how cancer can be genetic, even if someone is the first in the family to get it? Yes and yes.

I paused at the phrasing of my mother?s next question. ?Lung cancer is one of the bad ones. Right??

***

I have heard several stories of cancer survivors who, years later, did not remember much of the beginning of their illness, but had it tattooed on their brain how long they were told they were going to live. For this reason, my clinical preceptors recommend steering clear of hard and fast numbers when talking to individuals. Rather, doctors should emphasize that each patient?s situation is unique.

The lesson I got from these stories is that when you are in the medical profession, your words matter. People have a special propensity for recalling anything that can be interpreted as a prognosis.

The same holds true for those just perceived to be in the medical profession. And, like it or not, a first-year medical student falls into this category.

What I realized from going home is that I can now state an objective medical fact ? and have it interpreted as a personal diagnosis. I do not speak all that differently from how I spoke six months ago. Yet I am heard differently.

Talking about lung cancer, as an illness, is not the same as talking about our family friend?s lung cancer. But to my parents, it could be taken that way.

I do understand my mother?s motivation in asking. I ask my computer scientist friend when something goes wrong with my computer, and I feel fortunate that my friends have skills to impart to me informally. I would probably feel mildly offended if he waved his hands and said he was unqualified to say anything. But you know more than I do, I would probably say. Come on ? tell me something.

Is medicine different? Certainly. It?s inherently about human life. But is it fundamentally, categorically different?

Just because I am in medical school, am I no longer allowed to state objective scientific facts, because they might be deciphered incorrectly? How much of someone else?s interpretation is my responsibility?

I chose my words carefully. ?For some people, the symptoms of lung cancer can be subtle or mistaken for other respiratory problems, so it?s tough to catch early. The course of treatment depends on several factors, like the size of the tumor and whether it has spread,? I offered.

***

People ask questions for many reasons. They might be genuinely curious. Or, they might have a vested interest in the answer.

I spent my holiday break walking a moral tightrope between providing information and censoring myself for fear of misinterpretation. I was torn between wanting to educate and worrying I would somehow mislead. Between trying to help, while being cautious not to overstep my boundaries.

The simple solution to my dilemma is: say nothing. Say: ?ask your doctor.? Say: ?I?m sorry, but this is not my role.?
But, choose to say anything more, and you must always consider how it might be construed. What can be read between the lines. What can be taken out of context.

While I do not think it is feasible to hide behind a mask of invariable silence whenever the topic of medicine arises, I do think part of my new role is being more sensitive to gauging the asker?s motivations and adjusting my answers accordingly. Whether I feel like a doctor or not, I am aware that I am seen as speaking from a different position than I was a year ago.

I was careful to remind my parents that every patient?s situation is unique, that I am far, far from a physician, and that I am not involved in their friend?s care and therefore don?t know the details of his situation. Yet I still wonder if I spoke irresponsibly.

Sometimes, there is no bright line between information and advice.

It would be unfair to say that another?s misreading of my words is entirely on my shoulders. But I think I?d be just as reckless in blinding myself to the possibility.

Does Your Spending Plan Include Investing?

Don?t forget to budget investments as you plan your finances.

As you create a budget or spending plan, it?s important to remember to plan for the long term, including investing. It?s easy to overlook setting money aside for investments when you are looking at more immediate concerns related to buying groceries, paying insurance premiums, getting braces for the kids and paying down debt. Investing can fall to the wayside.

Don?t let it. Make sure that your spending plan includes some way to invest your money, putting it to work for you.

You Might Already Be Investing

Perhaps you are already investing. If you are contributing to a retirement account, you are putting money in an investment account that grows over time. Your money works for you, hopefully growing in a manner that is tax advantaged, by giving you a tax deduction now, or by growing tax free so that you don?t have to pay taxes when withdraw it.

Perhaps you can increase your contributions to your retirement account, and put the power of compounding interest to work for you even more effectively.

Investing in Your Future

If you aren?t already investing, now is a great time to start. Consider what investments you think will best help you accomplish your goals. If possible, start out with a tax-advantaged retirement account. You want to be able to get the most out of your money, and a tax benefit is one of the best ways to accomplish that goal, since it allows you to put more of your money to work for you.

You don?t need to start with something complex, either. Mutual funds (especially index funds) and ETFs are low cost investments that are fairly easy to understand, and that are considered a little less risky than some of the other investment options out there. Funds are usually considered among the best options because they are cost-efficient, and take advantage of the fact that, over time, the stock market has yet to lose.

You can also consider investments like stocks and bonds. Others like to include commodities, currencies and real estate in their portfolios. However, before you invest in anything, you should do your investment research and make sure you understand how the investment works, and the risks involved.

Budgeting for Investments

As you create your spending plan or budget, make sure to remember to include money for investing. Whether you limit your efforts to a tax-advantaged retirement account, or whether you decide to branch out into other investment accounts after maxing out your retirement account contributions, you can make room in your budget to prepare for the future.

Decide how much money you can afford to lock away long-term in an investment account. Look for ways to cut frivolous spending that doesn?t match your priorities so that you have more money to put toward your investing goals. You can also consider ways to make more money so that you have extra funds to invest. There are income investments, like dividend stocks or bonds, that can help you maximize your money (if you are careful).

Investing can be a good way to build your wealth ? especially if you are planning to build your wealth for the future. The earlier you start, and the more you can put aside for investing, the better off you?ll be. However, you need to make sure you can afford to lose the money, and realize that there are risks involved with any investment.

You are responsible for your own investment decisions.

Gingrich rising in SC, but in time to edge Romney? (AP)

EASLEY, S.C. ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is drawing big, enthusiastic crowds and fending off new attacks from GOP front-runner Mitt Romney while reveling in a strong debate performance and a nod from tea party favorite Sarah Palin.

Now he's set to pick up the endorsement of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who officials say is abandoning his presidential bid to back the former House speaker. Adding to the intrigue, a bus emblazoned with Herman Cain's name sat in the hotel parking lot where Perry was to speak and endorse Gingrich. Cain, a tea party favorite, dropped out of the race late last year.

For all the positive developments for Gingrich, it's unclear whether his latest burst of momentum, reflected in both internal and public polling, will be enough for him to overtake Romney in Saturday's South Carolina primary. Complicating his effort is another conservative ? Rick Santorum ? who threatens to siphon his support.

And now, just two days before South Carolina votes, Gingrich is facing a fresh challenge that could undercut his efforts to cast himself as the strongest conservative challenger to Romney.

ABC News said it will air Thursday night an interview with Gingrich's second wife on its late-night news program "Nightline." The network has not indicated what the ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, said in the interview, but ABC planned to release excerpts ahead of Thursday night's GOP debate and "Nightline" itself.

In an interview Thursday with NBC's "Today" show, Gingrich declined to talk in detail about any damage to his campaign that might come from the interview.

"I'm not going to say anything bad about Marianne," Gingrich said, adding that he thought it was wrong for the network to be "intruding into family things that are more than a decade old."

The mere existence of the interview shines a spotlight on a part of Gingrich's past that could turn off Republican voters in a state filled with religious and cultural conservatives who may cringe at his two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelities.

Marianne Gingrich has said Gingrich proposed to her before the divorce from his first wife was final in 1981; they were married six months later. Her marriage to Gingrich ended in divorce in 2000, and Gingrich has admitted he'd already taken up with Callista Bisek, a former congressional aide who would become his third wife. The speaker who pilloried President Bill Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky was himself having an affair at the time.

Underscoring the potential threat to his rise, Gingrich's campaign released a statement from his two daughters from his first marriage ? Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman ? suggesting that Marianne Gingrich's comments may be suspect given the emotional toll divorce takes on everyone involved.

"Anyone who has had that experience understands it is a personal tragedy filled with regrets and sometimes differing memories of events," their statement said.

A CNN/Time South Carolina poll released Wednesday showed Gingrich in second place with support from 23 percent of likely primary voters, having gained 5 percentage points in the past two weeks. Romney led in the poll with 33 percent, but he had slipped some since the last survey. Santorum was in third place, narrowly ahead of Texas Rep. Ron Paul and well ahead of Perry.

Regardless of the South Carolina outcome, Gingrich was making plans to continue to Florida, which holds its primary Jan. 31.

"There is one candidate who can give you a conservative nominee and only one candidate who can stop Mitt Romney," Gingrich told an overflow crowd of about 400 at Mutt's BBQ in Easley on Wednesday. "A vote for anyone else is a vote that allows Mitt Romney to potentially be our nominee."

Confidence exudes from Gingrich, who rose in Iowa only to be knocked off course after sustaining $3 million in attack ads in Iowa from an outside group that supports Romney. Gingrich posted dismal showings in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

By the time the race turned to South Carolina, he was sharply criticizing Romney as a social moderate who is timid about attacking the nation's economic troubles. He also raised questions about Romney's experience as a venture capitalist, while a super PAC that supports Gingrich aggressively attacked Romney as a vicious corporate raider. And Gingrich ripped Romney for standing by as a super PAC run by former top Romney political aides continued to attack him in South Carolina.

Romney ended up on the defensive and by Monday night's debate, Gingrich was back in command. He earned a standing ovation when he labeled Democratic President Barack Obama "the best food stamp president in American history." The clip became the centerpiece of a television ad that began airing Wednesday as Gingrich worked to cast himself as the Republican with the best chance of beating Obama in the fall ? stealing a page from Romney's playbook.

Said Gingrich senior adviser David Winston, "His taking on Barack Obama showed a toughness and an electability that the electorate is looking for."

On Tuesday, Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, announced that, if she lived in South Carolina, she would vote for Gingrich to keep the Republican race going.

Since then, Romney's campaign, probably sensing Gingrich's rise and working to deflect from its own troubles, has been trying to undercut Gingrich's claim that he helped President Ronald Reagan create millions of jobs in the 1980s, likening it to "Al Gore taking credit for the Internet."

Romney also dispatched supporters to make the case that Gingrich is erratic and unreliable. A new Romney Web video features former Republican Rep. Susan Molinari of New York saying Gingrich lacked discipline and labeling his time as speaker "leadership by chaos."

Gingrich, for his part, has been helped by the fact that Santorum has seemed unable to capitalize on the endorsement of a group of influential Christian conservatives. Those who aren't backing the former Pennsylvania senator seem to be coming Gingrich's way.

Gingrich picked up the endorsement of Florence pastor William Monroe on Wednesday, after receiving the backing of former Perry supporter James Livingston, a retired Marine who had been featured in an advertisement for the Texas governor. Greenville businesswoman Vivian Wong, who had endorsed former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, threw her support to Gingrich on Sunday, the night Huntsman withdrew from the race.
