(AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling New Jersey residents devastated by a massive storm that "we're going to be here for the long haul."

Joined by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Obama inspected the devastation from superstorm Sandy, flying high over flooded neighborhoods and sand-strewn streets.

At a community center where people have taken shelter, Obama said one of his top priorities is getting power back on.

Christie said it was "really important" to have the president of the United States in New Jersey.

Dow and Nasdaq dip, S&P inches up after two-day Sandy shutdown

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The stock market slowly returned to life on Wednesday after two days in the dark, in the wake of the massive storm Sandy that caused the market's first weather-related two-day closure since the late 19th century.

The major stock indexes' early gains were short-lived as buying receded quickly. The S&P 500 was mostly flat in a session that is on track to be busier than the average day in U.S. markets, in part because of pent-up demand after the two-day closure.

Traders made it through the darkened streets of downtown Manhattan before sunrise to the New York Stock Exchange at 11 Wall Street, one of the only buildings with any electricity in that area after Sandy crippled power supply and disrupted mass transit throughout the New York metropolitan region.

"I was driving in at 5:45 this morning in the dark, but the red and blue lights of the exchange were on, and it was clear that ours was the only building down here that was functional," said Jonathan Corpina, senior managing partner at Meridian Equity Partners, in New York.

The two-day weather-related break was the stock market's first multi-day closure for weather since 1888. It was a rare occurrence that affected long-time floor traders, the small corner of human element still left in a market that has become mostly electronic. Floor traders have opened after adverse events in the past, with the last weather-related closure resulting from Hurricane Gloria in September 1985.

"Sometimes we closed early, and sometimes we opened late, but it's always been open," said Ted Weisberg, president and trader at Seaport Securities, a veteran of the trading floor for 43 years. "That's the psyche that the people on the floor operate with."

Trading volume was average, with more than 3 billion shares exchanging hands before midday on the NYSE, Nasdaq and NYSE MKT. The Dow and the Nasdaq were trading slightly lower and the Nasdaq had inched higher by late afternoon, with a pick-up in volume expected ahead of the market's close on the last trading day of the month.

"The open was a positive relief after four days of sitting on edge," said Larry Leibowitz, the chief operating officer at NYSE operator NYSE/Euronext. "No matter how much planning you do, you can't foresee that kind of flooding."

Not everything was working as usual. Cell phone reception was sketchy on the floor of the NYSE, so traders were mulling around outside the exchange building making calls, texting and emailing on their phones.

Market participants on locations outside Manhattan also reported some normalcy, though the lack of electric power in the region was a hurdle, and forced many to rush to the pump to keep generators running.

"The biggest concern is getting gas. We were getting an extra bunch of gas to make sure our generator goes on," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey, some 25 miles west of Wall Street.

"It's like 'Mad Max,' the movie," he said. "Everyone's looking for gas, and protecting their gas when they buy it."

Knight Capital, the nation's largest market maker - which buys and sells stocks on behalf of clients - told clients to send orders to other brokerages due to power issues. The Jersey City-based company said its backup generators failed, hurting its ability to take orders and trade stocks and options, and its stock fell 3.4 percent to $2.53.

Unsurprisingly, investors made a knee-jerk move to buy companies that stand to benefit from home repairs. Home Depot climbed 2.4 percent to $61.48 while rival Lowe's rose 3.1 percent to $32.34.

Generator manufacturer Generac Holdings shares surged 18.6 percent to $33.60, building on a rally that started before Sandy. The company reported earnings Tuesday evening and said the rest of the year would be better than expected because of increased demand for home generators.

"We're seeing reactions from Home Depot and the insurers. But I think these will be relatively short-lived. What matters is the election and the fiscal cliff," Weisberg said.

The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 8.86 points, or 0.07 percent, to 13,098.35. The S&P 500 edged up 0.56 of a point, or 0.04 percent, to 1,412.50. The Nasdaq Composite fell 9.87 points, or 0.33 percent, to 2,978.08.

Ford Motor Co rallied 6.9 percent to $11.02 as the NYSE's most-active stock after the automaker reported strong results while the market was closed. General Motors reported earnings that beat expectations, driving its shares up 9.5 percent to $25.49.

Weakness in Apple Inc, which announced management changes earlier in the week, weighed on the Nasdaq but was off its session low. The stock fell 0.8 percent to $599.47.

Facebook shares slid 4.2 percent to $21.03 after the expiration of a lockup period that had prevented some employees from selling stock.

Walt Disney Co agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas's Lucas film Ltd and its "Star Wars" franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that includes the surprising promise of a new film in the series in 2015. Disney, a Dow component, fell 2.3 percent to $48.96.

do cultural differences matter and when should you have a baby?

Do Cultural Differences Matter and when should you have a Baby?

by Sandra Prior

Finding a compatible partner is complex: often we are attracted to people who are very different to us; sometimes we may be attracted to people who display similar characteristics to our parents. We may be motivated to repeat patterns in old relationships, perhaps in the hope of it working out differently.

We may select a partner who will make up for our own weaknesses or who will satisfy some of our subconscious needs. Or we may seek the satisfaction of some need that was unfulfilled by a parent. The success of a relationship doesn?t hinge on matching everything as closely as possible, but more on one?s willingness to work at the relationship, respecting your partner?s world, and your unconditional acceptance of them. Compatibility is worked at over time and is constantly renegotiated.

You must, however, distinguish between deeply entrenched values (money, children, religion) and surface values. If people are able to accept, respect and manage their difference in values, beliefs and culture, great. Even better if they are able to fuse, redefine and grow new values as a couple. But if people wish to hold on to what is familiar to them, similarity in fundamental values is necessary. We shouldn?t over estimate our ability to manage the difference; especially in the first stages of a relationship. When we are in love, everything seems possible.

Is there a Right Age to have a Baby

Deciding to have a child is probably the biggest decision you?ll ever make. There is no such thing as a right age ? only readiness, which involves emotional and physical health, maturity, financial and social support and a willingness to integrate a child into your life.

Having a baby is something to look forward to: consciously creating a family to call your own; unconscious reasons are far more complex. For some, having a baby is an opportunity to give a child that which they never had, some hope a child will save a troubled marriage. The only reason you should have a child is a) to express the love which exists between you and your partner; and b) to experience the joy of seeing this little being become all they can be.

Being a parent is a huge responsibility; to get it right you need to:

Establish a healthy relationship with your partner.

Build a good support system with family, friends and other resources. Balance your life with interests that challenge you in different ways and allow you to explore different aspects of who you are. Research shows that women who work have better relationships with their children and their partners, and have a higher self-esteem.

The problem with most WoW cooking guides, however, is that they provide just one way to gain cooking skill and don?t allow for the differences between Horde and Alliance, or even the different races.

For example, a Night Elf will have access to different recipes than an Orc, and visa versa. Some are available only on the Horde side and others are only for the Alliance.

Wrath of the Kitchen King (WotKK) provides a complete guide to leveling your in-game cooking skill, regardless of your faction or race. Options for recipe choices are provided every step of the way, as well as info on how to get the recipes, making it easy to take your cooking skill all the way to the limit (currently level 450.)

It?s time. The raid has begun. You and your guild are crushing the bosses, but you are stuck with yesterday?s pizza. Cold and dreary.

Wouldn?t it be great if while your charcter is doing his job you chow down on some yummy Conjured Sweet Rolls? Or how about some Arathi Basin Field Rations (see pic?)

By the way, have you ever wondered what Galger?s Cactus Apple Surprise (below, from the Orc & Troll starting area) is really like? Is it really so cool and refreshing? Yes, it is, and we?ll show you exactly how to make it. Just the thing for when the Battleground gets too hot!

You get the in-game cooking guide and the real world cookbook. One of the discoveries you?ll make in the cookbook is just why anyone would want to eat Deep Run Rat? Well, just try the Deep Run Rat Kabob and you?ll find out!

Metal Gear Solid fans will finally be able to try out the Russian Rations and see if they?re really up to snuff

There?s nothing to worry about. Complete instructions are provided for every recipe and plenty of help for the person with low-level cooking skills is provided. Making a delicious Carrion Surpise is easier than you think!

Then you?ll be able to jump right in and cook up a wonderful meal for all of your real life guildies.

(AP) ? Titus Young made the most of his opportunity to replace Nate Burleson.

Young caught his second touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford on a 1-yard slant with 20 seconds left, lifting the Detroit Lions to a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Zach Miller made a spectacular, 16-yard catch on a toss from Russell Wilson with 5:27 left to put the Seahawks ahead. But Seattle (4-4) couldn't stop the Lions (3-4) on their last possession.

Stafford led a 16-play drive that started at Detroit 20 with 5:27 remaining. The possession began with a 15-yard pass to Calvin Johnson and was kept alive with third-down conversion passes to Johnson in Lions territory and to Joique Bell that set up the winning score from just outside the goal line.

After Stafford had to throw two passes away to avoid sacks, Young broke inside of cornerback Brandon Browner and caught the winning TD pass.

Burleson broke his right leg in Monday night's loss at Chicago, pushing Young up the depth chart. The second-year pro took advantage of his shot to get more involved with an offense that has fallen short of expectations. Young, who caught a go-ahead TD midway through the second quarter, set career highs with nine receptions and 100 yards receiving.

Stafford was 34 of 49 for 352 yards with three TDs, also connecting with rookie Ryan Broyles in the end zone at the end of the first quarter. The quarterback also ran for a 1-yard TD that gave Detroit a lead early in the fourth period for the first time this year.

It looked like the Lions were going to blow it. The Seahawks went ahead when Wilson lobbed a pass into the end zone that a leaping Miller tipped to himself with his right hand and hauled in with both hands for the go-ahead TD.

Seattle, though, was the team that failed to hold onto the lead and ended up losing consecutive games for the first time this year.

Wilson was 25 of 35 for 236 yards with two TDs and an interception. Marshawn Lynch ran just 12 times for 105 yards, including a career-high 77-yard run early in the second quarter for one of the many lead changes in the closely contested game.

Sidney Rice had six receptions for 55 yards and a 9-yard score that put Seattle up 17-7 early in the second quarter.

Young's first score, catching a 46-yard pass in stride from Stafford, started Detroit's comeback on the ensuing possession. His second one sealed the much-needed victory for the Lions.

McIlroy beats Woods in China exhibition

ZHENGZHOU, China (AP) ? Rory McIlroy outdueled Tiger Woods in the first one-on-one exhibition match between golf's two biggest names.

Woods thinks he'll have plenty of chances to get revenge.

McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 to beat Woods by one stroke in an 18-hole match between the two top-ranked golfers at the Jinsha Lake Golf Club in central China on Monday.

"This is certainly not like most Mondays. To have this many people come out and watch us play golf in an exhibition was something special. This doesn't happen," Woods said. "As far as doing something like this down the road, it would be fun."

The event, dubbed "Duel at Jinsha Lake," marked the first time the two golfers had played head-to-head without other competitors. It probably won't be the last.

Woods said he'd relish the chance to take on McIlroy more often to create a rivalry at the top of the game similar to the one between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray that have made men's tennis so exciting in recent years.

"If you look at the history of the game, it's not like other sports where the guys play against each other all the time. Jack (Nicklaus) and Arnold (Palmer) didn't go at it that often," Woods said. "But you know what, if we can do this for the next 10, 15 years, then certainly we can have that type of rivalry.

"I think having matches like this to promote the game of golf is what it's all about. We're trying to promote the game of golf in this region and it's come a long way since my first time here 11 years ago."

McIlroy took an early lead with two birdies on the first three holes and held on to beat Woods, who had two bogeys to go along with his six birdies for the day. The 14-time major winner finished with a 68.

Both players competed elsewhere Sunday and had to make long journeys to Zhengzhou, an industrial city in China's Henan province. McIlroy finished second to Peter Hanson in the European Tour's BMW Masters at Shanghai, while Woods tied for fourth in the PGA Tour's CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

McIlroy, who captured the PGA Championship in August for his second major, said the win over Woods offered some consolation for his defeat Sunday when he surged back from four shots down against Hanson only to lose by one stroke in the end.

"It's been a nice distraction to not dwell on what happened yesterday. I let a great chance to win a golf tournament slip through my fingers," McIlroy said. "Coming to do something like this today has definitely made it a little easier to deal with."

After falling two strokes behind on the front nine, Woods hit a perfect chip shot from the fairway on the par-3 12th hole that hit the pin and dropped in for birdie, bringing him within one shot of the Northern Irishman.

However, he then missed a long putt for par on the next hole, settling for bogey, while McIlroy sank a 7-footer for par.

Woods made birdie on the 14th hole to pull within a stroke again, but he missed his final chance to level the score on the 18th when he misplayed his approach shot and landed in a bunker, muttering "where did that go?"

The first head-to-head matchup between Woods and McIlroy ? at the eight-player World Golf Final in Turkey this month ? was far more one-sided. Woods shot a 7-under 64 to defeat the Northern Irishman by six strokes in a group match at the exhibition event.

China has lured a number of the world's top players with lucrative exhibitions in the past few years as part of an effort to grow the sport's popularity and market a bevy of new celebrity-designed courses.

No expense ? or extravagance ? was spared in welcoming Woods and McIlroy to the Jinsha Lake Golf Club.

As stunt planes buzzed overhead, a fleet of Rolls Royces whisked the players to the course, passing helicopters for sale and Aston Martins and Maseratis with showgirls draped over them. After the two struck a gong to open the event, fireworks exploded behind them and confetti cannons rained gold flakes over the jostling crowd.

Some spectators, however, were skeptical whether an event like this would actually attract new fans to the sport in China.

"The bosses here maybe want to sell the villas so they introduce two big stars to come here," said Michael Wong, vice editor-in-chief of China's Golfweek magazine in Beijing. "It's a show more than a game."

Nonetheless, fans on the course were excited to see golf's biggest names.

Ji Tianxin, a 14-year-old student and occasional golfer, came with her father from Nanjing to watch McIlroy, her favorite player.

"I don't usually get this chance to watch the best players," she said, watching the players putt on the fourth hole. "I think the two are both stars so I really wanted to see them."

The duel even led to some sibling rivalry between a brother and sister from Beijing. Li Weiyang is a longtime fan of Woods because he appreciates his skills and finds him "charming," but his older sister Jing Sun was rooting for McIlroy.

Jing said they didn't have a wager on the match, but she thought it was a good idea.

"The bet can be who will drive back home," she said. "It's a long drive."

This is another post in our current series introducing readers to special education law's key concepts.? Today's post is about related services. This phrase is almost always preceded by "special education and..."

Let me know if you are enjoying this series. For some it is an introduction.? For others it is a chance to brush up on the key concepts...

Related Services

The IDEA defines related services as follows:

(A)? IN GENERAL- The term ?related services? means transportation, and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services (including speech-language pathology and audiology services, interpreting services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, including therapeutic recreation, social work services, school nurse services designed to enable a child with a disability to receive a free and appropriate public education as described in the individualized education program of the child, counseling services, including rehabilitation counseling, orientation and mobility services, and medical services, except that such medical services shall be for diagnostic and evaluation purposes only) as may be required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education?

(B)? EXCEPTION?The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.

IDEA, ? 602(26).? See, 34 C.F.R. ? 300.34.

????????????? The issue of related services has resulted in two decisions by the United States Supreme Court.?? The first decision was? Irving Independent Sch. Dist. v. Tatro ?468 U.S. 883, 104 S.Ct. 3371, 555 IDELR 511 (1984).? The Court affirmed the Court of Appeals holding that a procedure known as clean intermittent catheterization was a related service because the student could not attend school without it and, therefore, without the procedure she could not benefit from special education.? Tatro, supra.? The Supreme Court also affirmed the holding of the Court of Appeals that clean intermittent catheterization is not exempted by the medical services provision because the procedure did not have to be performed by a doctor, it could be done by a layperson with an hour of training. Tatro, supra.

????????????? The second decision was Cedar Rapids Community Sch. Dist. v. Garret F.? 526 U.S. 66, 119 S.Ct. 992, 29 IDELR 966 (1999).? In this case, the Supreme Court held that urinary bladder catheterization and suctioning of tracheotomy plus various monitoring was a related service.? Garret F., supra.? Applying the ?bright line? test of the Tatro decision, the Court held that because the related services did not have to be performed by a physician, the medical services exclusion did not apply and the schools were required to provide the services for the student.? Garret F., supra.? The Court specifically and emphatically rejected the argument raised by the schools that the cost of providing the services was a defense.? Garret F., supra.?

????????????? In Marshall Joint Sch Dist No.2 v CD by Brian & Traci D 616 F. 3d 632, 54 IDELR 307 (7th Cir 8/2/10), the Seventh Circuit? concluded that the student did not need specialized instruction.? Any need for PT or OT, therefore, was not relevant.

Windows 8: Make-or-break moment for Microsoft CEO | wishtv.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer can't afford to be wrong about Windows 8.

On Thursday in New York, Microsoft will unveil a dramatic overhaul of its ubiquitous Windows operating system. If it flops, the failure will reinforce perceptions that Microsoft is falling behind competitors such as Apple, Google and Amazon as its stranglehold on personal computers becomes less relevant in an era of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

If Ballmer is right, Windows 8 will prove that the world's largest software maker still has the technological chops and marketing muscle to shape the future of computing.

"This is going to be his defining moment," said technology industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. Ballmer's "legacy will be looked at as what he did or didn't do with Windows 8. If Windows 8 is not a success, a lot of people will be looking for Microsoft to make a change at the CEO level."

Windows 8 is designed to run on PCs and tablet computers, heralding the biggest change to the industry's dominant operating system in at least 17 years. It also marks the first time that Microsoft has made touch-screen control the top priority, though the system can still be switched into the familiar desktop mode that allows for control by keyboard and mouse.

Ballmer sees Windows 8 as the catalyst for a new era at Microsoft. He wants the operating system to ensure the company plays an integral role on all the important screens in people's lives ? PCs, smartphones, tablets and televisions.

"We are trying to re-imagine the world from the ground up with Windows 8," Ballmer told The Seattle Times. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

Early reaction has been mixed. Some reviewers like the way the system greets users with a mosaic of tiles displaying applications instead of relying on the desktop icons that served as the welcome mat for years. Critics say it's a confusing jumble that will frustrate users accustomed to the older versions, particularly when they switch to desktop mode and don't see the familiar "start" button and menu.

Windows 8 will hit the market backed by an estimated $1 billion marketing campaign. The advertising frenzy is just one measure of how important Windows 8 is to Microsoft's future.

Ballmer's margin for error is slim after being consistently outpaced by Apple and Google in his nearly 13 years as CEO. During his tenure, Microsoft's stock has lost nearly half its value, wiping out more than $200 billion in shareholder wealth.

But the company's board hasn't expressed any public dissatisfaction with Ballmer, who is Microsoft's second-largest shareholder with a 4 percent stake worth $9 billion. Only his good friend and predecessor, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, owns more of the company's stock. Gates has a 5.5 percent stake.

Since Ballmer succeeded Gates as CEO in January 2000, Microsoft's annual revenue has nearly quadrupled to $74 billion and expanded into lucrative new territory with its popular Xbox 360 video game console, which has given the company a platform for delivering services to television sets. But Microsoft has been slow to respond to technology shifts and has made some costly missteps trying to catch up.

Some of the best-known blunders include the company's iPod clone, the Zune, and its $6.3 billion acquisition of Internet ad service aQuantive.

Ballmer, 56, has spent most of his life at Microsoft. He was attending Stanford University's graduate school of business in 1980 when Gates, a former classmate at Harvard University, persuaded him to drop out and become one of the startup's first 30 employees. He brought more business savvy to the operation just as the company began providing an operating system for IBM Corp.'s first personal computer.

Just two weeks before Ballmer took over, Microsoft's stock reached its peak price. The dot-com bust quickly deflated that market value, and the company became locked in antitrust battles in the U.S. and Europe that distracted management for years.

The biggest question hovering over Windows 8: Is it innovative and elegant enough to lure consumers who are increasingly fond of smartphones, tablets and other sleek gadgets? Those mobile devices have been setting industry standards while Microsoft engineers have spent two years designing a new operating system.

And Windows 8 must address not only the upheaval in the computing market since Windows 7 came out in 2009, but also have the flexibility to adjust to future shifts in technology before Microsoft releases another version in two or three years.

"It doesn't seem like Microsoft is really pushing consumers into the future with Windows 8," said Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. "What Microsoft has done is like buying a pair of shoes for a kid. The shoes may fit exactly right today, but those shoes probably won't fit six months from now."

Previous versions of Windows and other Microsoft products such as Office are so deeply embedded in companies and government agencies that Microsoft is still assured a steady stream of revenue from that segment of the market. That loyal base of customers is one of the reasons that Microsoft is expected to earn $25 billion on revenue of $80 billion in its current fiscal year ending next June.

"This isn't a company that is on the edge of extinction, like some people would have you think," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. "What we are seeing with Windows 8 is classic Microsoft. They let the (technology) market lead and then they follow."

But investors want to see Microsoft do something more. The nagging fear on Wall Street is that the PC industry is past its prime and heading into a gradual decline that will pull down Microsoft, too.

The signs of decay have been proliferating since Apple released the iPad in 2010, hatching a tablet computer market that has combined with an already vibrant smartphone market to siphon away technology spending that used to go toward the latest PCs.

Worldwide PC sales year are expected to decline this year for the first time since 2001, according to the research firm ISH iSuppli. It's a drop of just 1 percent, but it underscores a troubling trend that has been hurting Microsoft.

The shift to mobile devices has whittled Microsoft's worldwide share of the computing device market from 67 percent in 2008 to about 30 percent today, estimates Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett. Thanks to its Android software for phones and tablets, Google is now the leader with a 40 percent share of the computing device market. Apple stands at 20 percent.

Analysts don't expect Microsoft's corporate and government customers to immediately embrace the new system, no matter how much it's hyped. About half of this traditionally cautious group of customers still haven't upgraded to Windows 7. Most analysts expect companies and government to hold off on switching to Windows 8 for at least another year.

Ballmer hopes to accelerate the changeover by making Microsoft's Office software suite more compelling, with the help of two major acquisitions.

Microsoft bought the video chat service Skype for $8.5 billion last year and in June agreed to pay $1.2 billion for Yammer, a service the builds social networking services within companies. Both are expected to become key features within Office to make it easier for workers to connect and collaborate with their peers and customers.

Ballmer also has won praise from analysts for striking potentially fruitful partnerships with Yahoo Inc. and Nokia. Microsoft now provides Yahoo with much of the same technology that runs its Bing search engine. The Yahoo deal provides Microsoft with 12 percent of the revenue from the ads shown alongside search results on Yahoo's website.

The Nokia alliance ensured Windows 8 would be the operating system on that company's latest line of smartphones, a potentially valuable platform if Nokia is able to regain some of the market share it has lost in mobile phones during the past five years.

(Microsoft has also joined with The Associated Press to use AP content in Windows 8 news applications.)

But none of that has yet restored the luster Microsoft had on Wall Street when Gates was in charge.

Ballmer's initially dismissed emerging threats from Google and Apple. He consistently pooh-poohed Google as a one-trick company during its early years and in 2007 declared: "No chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share."

Those were some of his biggest mistakes, detractors say. Google quickly made important inroads in Internet video, online maps, email and mobile computing and contributed to the damage that the iPhone and iPad have done to Microsoft and its partners in the PC market.

Apple's meteoric rise has been especially painful for Microsoft. When Steve Jobs returned to run Apple in 1997, the company was so bad off that it needed a $150 million infusion from Microsoft to stay afloat. Now Apple has a market value of $570 billion ? more than double Microsoft's $250 billion.

On Tuesday, Apple got a chance to upstage Microsoft when CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPad Mini, a smaller and less expensive version of its top-selling tablet.

On Thursday in New York, Ballmer will herald the arrival of the most important product of his reign. The market's response to Windows 8 may determine whether it turns out to be the opening act in his vindication or one of his final moments in the spotlight.

Self-affirmation enhances performance, makes us receptive to our mistakes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Life is about failure as much as it is about success. From the mistakes we make at work or school to our blunders in romantic relationships, we are constantly reminded of how we could be better. By focusing on the important qualities that make us who we are -- a process called self-affirmation -- we preserve our self-worth in the face of our shortcomings.

Self-affirmation has been shown to have powerful effects -- research suggests that it can minimize the anxiety, stress, and defensiveness associated with threats to our sense of self while keeping us open to the idea that there is room for improvement. But how does the process of self-affirmation actually work?

New research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores the neurophysiological reactions that could explain how self-affirmation helps us deal with threats to our self-integrity.

"Although we know that self-affirmation reduces threat and improves performance, we know very little about why this happens. And we know almost nothing about the neural correlates of this effect," says lead researcher Lisa Legault of Clarkson University.

Legault and her colleagues Michael Inzlicht of the University of Toronto Scarborough and Timour Al-Khindi of Johns Hopkins University posed several hypotheses. They theorized that because self-affirmation has been shown to make us more open to threats and unfavorable feedback, it should also make us more attentive and emotionally receptive to the errors that we make.

The researchers further hypothesized that these effects on attention and emotion could be measured directly in the form of a well-known brain response called error-related negativity, or ERN. The ERN is a pronounced wave of electrical activity in the brain that occurs within 100 ms of making an error on a task.

To test their hypotheses, the researchers randomly assigned 38 undergraduates to either a self-affirmation or a non-affirmation condition at the beginning of the study. In the self-affirmation condition, participants were asked to rank six values -- including aesthetic, social, political, religious, economic, and theoretical values -- from most to least important. They then had five minutes to write about why their highest-ranked value was important to them. In the non-affirmation condition, participants also ranked the six values, but they then wrote why their highest-ranked value was not very important to them. This was done in order to undermine self-affirmation in that group.

After ranking the values, the participants performed a test of self-control -- the "go/no-go" task -- in which they were told to press a button whenever the letter M (the "go" stimulus) appeared on a screen; when the letter W (the "no-go" stimulus) appeared, they were supposed to refrain from pressing the button. To increase the sense of threat in the task, participants were given negative feedback ("Wrong!") when they made a mistake.

While they were completing the go/no-go task, the participants' brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography, or EEG.

The findings suggest that self-affirmation improved participants' performance on the go/no-go task. Participants in the self-affirmation condition made fewer errors of commission -- pressing the button when they shouldn't have -- than did those in the non-affirmation condition.

But the participants' brain activity revealed an even more interesting story. While the self-affirmation and non-affirmation groups showed similar brain activity when they answered correctly, self-affirmed participants showed a significantly higher ERN when they made an error. This effect held up even after the researchers accounted for the number of errors of commission and errors of omission the participants made, in addition to their reaction times for the task.

Notably, the association between the ERN and the number of errors that participants made was stronger for the self-affirmed group. This suggests that self-affirmation enhanced the ERN response for those participants, which in turned predicted their performance on the task. The researchers speculate that participants who were self-affirmed were more receptive to errors which allowed them to better correct for their mistakes.

"These findings are important because they suggest one of the first ways in which the brain mediates the effects of self-affirmation," says Legault.

While these findings help to demystify the mechanisms that underlie self-affirmation, they may also have important practical implications. According to Legault, "Practitioners who are interested in using self-affirmation as an intervention tactic in academic and social programming might be interested to know that the strategy produces measurable neurophysiological effects."

Legault says that, ultimately, this research helps to show that "error-related distress, and our awareness thereof, can actually be a good thing."

Report: Swedish princess engaged to US boyfriend

(AP) ? A Swedish newspaper says Princess Madeleine and her American boyfriend Chris O'Neill have been engaged.

The 30-year-old Madeleine is the youngest of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's three children and is fourth in line to the throne.

The tabloid Expressen reported on its website early Thursday that O'Neill proposed to Madeleine in New York about a month ago after asking the king for his daughter's hand in marriage.

Officials at the royal palace didn't immediately comment on the report, but a guard answering the phone at the palace said "information will be available" on the palace website later Thursday.

Madeleine lives in New York where she works for the World Childhood Foundation, a nonprofit founded by her mother.

In 2010, Madeleine broke off an earlier engagement after media reports that her then-fiance had cheated on her.

Farrell introduced as new Red Sox manager

BOSTON (AP) ? The Boston Red Sox have introduced John Farrell as their new manager.

Farrell appeared Tuesday at a news conference with club officials two days after the team announced it had reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays to allow him to leave with one year left on his three-year contract as manager. The Red Sox sent infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto and obtained reliever David Carpenter in the deal.

Farrell, Boston's pitching coach from 2007-10 under Terry Francona, takes over for Bobby Valentine, who was fired after one of the worst seasons in team history. The Red Sox finished in last place in the AL East with a 69-93 record, their worst since 1965 and four games behind the Blue Jays.

Farrell is the 46th manager in franchise history, and was introduced by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.

"As far as what you can expect from us on the field, I truly believe in an aggressive style of play," Farrell said. "That creates a strategy that is relentless, and I think that is critical."

Boston wanted to hire Farrell after it let Francona go, but Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos asked for a top player in return. At the time, Farrell had been with the Blue Jays for one season, going 81-81.

"We will give forth our best effort," Farrell said, "as a minimum."

In two seasons with Toronto, Farrell was 154-170 and finished fourth twice.

"We brought in a number of young players (in Toronto), and we installed a new running game," Farrell said, looking back on his time with the Blue Jays. "We ran into some outs because of that, and we struggled sometimes with that strategy."

The fallout from Farrell's exit has not been pretty in Toronto, especially after Farrell talked about his loyalty to the Blue Jays a few weeks back.

"My responsibility is to the ballclub," Anthopolous said over the weekend. "But I also understand the connection, I understand the ties. John had been there a long time, has a lot of strong relationships there. That's how he expressed it to me. This is the one job, there's no other city that was more of a perfect fit or a perfect opportunity."

The Red Sox wanted him as a known quantity who they've worked well with, a sharp contrast with Valentine, who clashed with players and didn't have full support of management, including Cherington, who preferred Dale Sveum. The Chicago Cubs hired Sveum as their manager after he interviewed with both teams.

Farrell brings a measure of stability to the manager's position and a familiarity with some players. His background with the Red Sox could be particularly valuable in improving the starting rotation.

"We have a number of things to take care of," Farrell said. "We will have the players' best interest in our minds at all times."

Jon Lester was 54-23 while Farrell was pitching coach and 15-9 in 2011 but fell to 9-14 with a career-worst 4.82 ERA last season. In his two full, injury-free seasons, Clay Buchholz was 17-7 with a 2.33 ERA in 2010 but 11-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 2012. Felix Doubront, who went 11-10 with a 4.86 ERA as a rookie in 2012, was a top prospect while Farrell was pitching coach. The Red Sox also get back John Lackey, who missed all of 2012 recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery.

Lester and Buchholz were All-Stars while Farrell was pitching coach.

"There are some relationships that I still have with players here, yes," Farrell said. "For others, I have to earn their trust and start new relationships."

Under Farrell's guidance, Boston pitchers held opponents to an AL-low .254 batting average and led the league with 4,771 strikeouts.

There has been considerable turnover among position players since Farrell left, but David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury remain. Ortiz, who can become a free agent, has expressed optimism about returning.

"When you look at the roster, there are still some very good major league players here," Farrell said. "We do need to get healthy."

Cherington reiterated his stance on Ortiz.

"We've had good dialogue since the season ended," he said. "The goal remains the same. We want him back in a Red Sox uniform, and we'll continue to work toward that end."

Farrell, 50, received a three-contract with the Red Sox, who also interviewed San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus, New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale.

Cherington thanked all the other candidates for their time and cooperation, and Farrell mentioned how honored he was to be in the mix with those potential managers.

"We think he's the right person to lead the team. It's important that I have a relationship with a manager that's strong. One that we can be candid with one another and walk away knowing that the relationship is still intact," Cherington said. "I feel confident with that and John."

It is the seventh time in major league history that one team has traded for a manager while he was under contract to another, the Red Sox said. Last year, the Miami Marlins obtained Ozzie Guillen from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that also included three players.

Aviles, 31, is a career .277 hitter who played 136 games for the Red Sox in 2012, mostly at shortstop. Carpenter, 27, is 1-5 with one save and a 5.70 ERA over 67 career relief appearances with the Astros and Blue Jays. He appeared in 33 games in 2012, 30 with the Astros before being sent to the Blue Jays in a 10-player trade on July 20; he also made 23 minor-league appearances last season. Originally a catcher, Carpenter converted to pitching in 2008.

Farrell was 36-46 with a 4.56 ERA as a major-league pitcher. He had a promising career with the Cleveland Indians before an injury sidelined him for all of the 1991 and 1992 seasons. He pitched sparingly for four more years after that.

"Managing in the big leagues is not an easy thing as everyone knows," Cherington said. "John is a presence that we need. Very consistent. Strong. His skillset and experience really gives him a chance here."

This is Cherington's second managerial hire in just one year on the job. The search to find Valentine lasted seven weeks longer than this one.

"It was important to get this done, and get focused right away on the 2013 Red Sox," Cherington said. "I've been on the job here 12 months, and I feel like most of that time was trying to find managers."

Farrell coached at Oklahoma State, where he had pitched in college, from 1997-2001. He then spent five years in the Indians' front office before Francona, a former Cleveland teammate, brought him to Boston as pitching coach.

"There's going to be challenges here. If there weren't challenges with this team, I probably wouldn't be sitting here," Farrell said. "But there are a lot of things here that make it a natural fit.

"We're eager to get started, and hit the ground running."
